Walt Disney World Resort has once again reworked the guest experience at rope drop at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park, marking the latest step in what appears to be an ongoing effort to refine the early-morning arrival process.
The First Rope Drop Change
Back in July, Walt Disney World Resort made a significant adjustment affecting non-Disney Resort hotel guests hoping to rope drop Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Rope dropping refers to arriving before the official park opening to be among the first guests inside, allowing early arrivals to bypass long lines on popular attractions or capture uncrowded photos.
Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park typically opens at 8:00 a.m., though Disney Resort hotel guests receive 30 minutes of Early Entry across all four Central Florida Disney parks, granting them access as early as 7:30 a.m. most days. Meanwhile, offsite and local guests were traditionally kept in the Oasis, a network of nature trails located just past the park's main entrance.
That changed in July, when Disney relocated the holding area for non-hotel guests to Discovery Island. This gave guests the option to wait near the bridge leading to their land of choice — whether Asia, Africa, or elsewhere — take photos in front of the Tree of Life before opening, or simply explore rather than stand crowded together in the Oasis.
A Second Rope Drop Change Arrives
As of September 27, Walt Disney World Resort has updated the procedure once again. WDWNT visited Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park on Sunday to document the newest changes, sharing this photo alongside their firsthand experience with the revised entry process:
This latest update has all but eliminated the traditional holding area system, now allowing guests into most lands throughout the park before the official opening. Disney cast members stationed at individual attraction entrances scan MagicBands or park tickets to confirm Early Entry eligibility for anyone joining a ride queue. Offsite and local guests, meanwhile, can wait just outside attraction entrances or explore the park freely until it officially opens.
Pandora – The World of Avatar is the sole exception to this new, more open approach. Only guests eligible for Early Entry can access Pandora before the park's official opening, with Disney cast members verifying eligibility through MagicBand or ticket scans at the land's entrance. All other guests must wait at the bridge on Discovery Island until the park opens before entering the Avatar (2009)-themed area.
