After rumors swirled regarding Sebastian Stan’s absence from the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World (2025), fans have been left wondering what’s next for the Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Though Stan hasn't been seen in the MCU since his role in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), a new report has sparked fresh excitement for his future in the franchise. So, will Bucky Barnes make his return to the big screen alongside Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, the new Captain America?

Stan’s portrayal of Bucky Barnes has been a fan favorite since he first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) alongside Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America). His transformation from a loyal friend to a brainwashed assassin, and ultimately a hero seeking redemption, has been a central theme throughout the MCU.
In The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, his character fully embraced his role as a hero once again, teaming up with Sam Wilson, who would later take up Captain America's mantle. Fans loved seeing Stan and Mackie work together, but will that partnership continue in Captain America: Brave New World?

Originally titled Captain America: New World Order, the movie has already undergone some changes, not just in name but also in its marketing approach. The trailer change came after the controversial assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, leading Marvel to shift its focus. The newly titled Brave New World hints at a global shift in power and politics, setting up the kind of high-stakes drama MCU fans have come to expect.
Barnes has been an integral part of Captain America’s story for over a decade. Anthony Mackie himself seemingly confirmed that Bucky would not have a major role in the film, stating that Stan and Daniel Brühl, who portrays Baron Zemo, were not on set during filming. This news disappointed fans hoping to see more of the Winter Soldier, but the story doesn’t end there.

Despite the official narrative, insider reports have hinted at a different outcome. Entertainment scooper My Time to Shine Hello has suggested that Stan might still make a brief appearance in Brave New World, though only in a cameo capacity.
While this might seem like a small consolation for fans of the character, any appearance of Bucky could be meaningful as the MCU continues to evolve its overarching storyline. Given that the film focuses on global politics and shifting alliances, a quick glimpse of Barnes could hint at deeper connections to the unfolding events coming later in the final Phase Five movie.

Even if his appearance in Brave New World is minimal, Bucky fans won’t have to wait long to see him in action again. Following the February release of Brave New World, Stan is slated to take a leading role in the upcoming Thunderbolts* movie, scheduled for release in mid-2025.
Directed by Jake Schreier, Thunderbolts* will bring together a collection of anti-heroes and former villains from across the MCU, including Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova (the new Black Widow), David Harbour’s Red Guardian, and Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent. In this film, Bucky Barnes will reportedly be a central figure, navigating the moral complexities of working alongside a team of misfits, setting the stage for some intense character development.

Stan remains one of the MCU’s biggest advocates, even during his time away from the screen. In a recent interview with Variety, he shared his thoughts on the increasing criticism of Marvel films.
“It’s become really convenient to pick on [Marvel films], and that’s fine. Everyone’s got an opinion,” the actor stated. “But they’re a big part of what contributes to this business and allow us to have smaller movies as well. This is an artery traveling through the system of this entire machinery that’s Hollywood”.
His defense of the MCU reflects his deep connection to the franchise and his appreciation for its influence on the broader film industry.

Beyond the MCU, Stan has been busy expanding his acting range. In 2024, he will star in A Different Man. Additionally, he is set to portray a young Donald Trump in The Apprentice (2024), a role that is sure to generate buzz as the film dives into Trump’s early years.
As for Brave New World, the film’s trailer introduced some returning MCU characters, including Carl Lumbly’s Isaiah Bradley and Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres, who is set to take up the mantle of Falcon following Sam Wilson’s transition to Captain America. But the film’s casting hasn’t been without controversy.

The inclusion of Ruth Bat-Seraph, portrayed by Israeli actress Shira Haas, has ignited debates regarding her inclusion in relation to the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In response, Marvel has reworked Bat-Seraph’s character, distancing her from the more controversial Sabra aspects of her comic book origins. In the film, she will be portrayed as an Israeli former Black Widow turned U.S. government ally rather than the divisive figure fans know from the comics.
Finally, fans are eagerly anticipating Harrison Ford's MCU debut. Ford will portray Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (and seemingly the Red Hulk), who takes over the role following the unfortunate passing of William Hurt. Ford’s role will extend beyond Brave New World, as Ross is expected to appear in Thunderbolts*.

So, while Bucky Barnes’ role in Brave New World may be smaller than some hoped for, the future looks bright for the Winter Soldier. With a potential cameo on the horizon and a leading role in Thunderbolts*, Stan’s beloved character is far from finished in the MCU.
What are your thoughts on Bucky’s possible cameo in Captain America: Brave New World?
