Six Flags Coaster Turns Deadly, One Man Killed and Several Injured

Some news stories arrive with answers. This one arrived mostly with questions. A man has died at Six Flags Over Georgia, police said, and the park's Goliath ride was evacuated. Others were injured.

We're approaching this report carefully. Each detail below is attributed to the person or organization that shared it, and we've tried to be plain about what hasn't been confirmed. Here's what is known, both full official statements, and the gaps that remain.

The Key Points

Police said a man has died at Six Flags Over Georgia. Cobb County police said several others were injured. Officials told Channel 2 that one visitor died and four were injured. Witnesses told WXIA they watched the man fall off a roller coaster. Riders on the Goliath were evacuated.

That's the core of what has been reported so far. Everything else is detail, and some of it is incomplete.

Two Descriptions of the Injured

You may notice that two reports describe the injured slightly differently. Cobb County police said “several others” were injured, while officials confirmed to Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell that four others were injured.

We're repeating both as they were reported. We aren't going to decide on our own how they fit together.

What Witnesses Said

Witnesses told CNN affiliate WXIA they watched the man fall off a roller coaster. That is what witnesses described. The park's statements refer to a “guest incident” and don't explain how it happened, and a confirmed cause isn't part of the information we have.

Because of that, we're not drawing conclusions, and we'd ask readers to be careful with accounts that go beyond what officials have confirmed.

The Scene at the Goliath

Channel 2's NewsChopper2 flew over the park and showed people on the Goliath being removed from the ride, with riders evacuated four at a time. The ride had stopped, with a set of its cars at the top. Aerial video from WXIA also showed other riders being evacuated.

The park is about 10 miles west of downtown Atlanta, in the City of Mableton in Cobb County.

What Six Flags Over Georgia Said

A Six Flags Entertainment Corporation spokesperson shared this full statement with Channel 2 Action News:

We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest's family, friends, and loved ones. We are also providing support to the guests and team members affected.

The park team and local authorities responded immediately, and we are cooperating fully with local authorities as they complete their investigation. Out of respect for the family's privacy, we will not be sharing additional details at this time.

CNN's reporting included a shorter version of that statement, consisting of the first two sentences.

What the City of Mableton Said

Mayor Michael Owens released a statement on behalf of the City of Mableton, where the park is located:

We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident at Six Flags Over Georgia today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the individual's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

Mableton Public Safety Director Dr. Kerry Stallings is coordinating with Cobb County Police and park security as the situation is addressed. We are grateful to the personnel responding to this incident and will continue to support coordination with the appropriate authorities.

Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation, we will refrain from commenting further at this time.

The Questions Without Answers Yet

The information available doesn't include the man's identity, a confirmed cause, or the condition of those who were injured. It also doesn't say whether the Goliath or the rest of the park will remain open, or how long the investigation may last.

The park and the city have each said they won't share more at this time out of respect for the family. We're following that lead by not guessing at what's missing.

An Unrelated Item in the Original Reporting

CNN pointed out that this death comes nearly two weeks after Six Flags Magic Mountain in California announced it will permanently close its ride X2, following a CNN investigation. Those are separate parks and separate rides, and the information we have doesn't link the two events. We include it only because it appeared in the source reporting.

Following the Story

Our thoughts are with the man's family, friends, and loved ones, and with everyone who was injured or affected. We'll keep following this story and update this report when officials confirm more.

For the latest, look to official sources, including the park, Cobb County police, and the City of Mableton. If you share this story, please keep to confirmed details and be thoughtful about the people involved.
