4. Repurposed Footage
The pre-show video viewed by all riders before entering the ride features Rod Serling, the host of the Twilight Zone television series. Because Rod Serling passed away in 1975, Disney Imagineers combined actual snippets of footage and audio, piecing them together seamlessly with the voiceover talents of an impersonator named Mark Silverman, who narrates the remainder of the video. If you watch the Twilight Zone episode titled “It’s a Good Life” you’ll recognize the familiar quotes, “This, as you may recognize, is a map of the United States.” and “Tonight’s episode on the Twilight Zone is somewhat unique, and calls for a different kind of introduction.” With a little refashioning and editing using both Serling’s actual voice and Mark Silverman’s sound-alike talents you’ll hear this as you watch the footage: “Tonight’s story on The Twilight Zone is somewhat unique and calls for a different kind of introduction. This, as you may recognize, is a maintenance service elevator, still in operation, waiting for you. We invite you, if you dare, to step aboard because in tonight’s episode, you are the star. And this elevator travels directly to…the Twilight Zone.” Photo credit YouTube.com.
