‘Snow White’ Could Now Lead Disney To Reinstate Future Live-Action Remakes

When Snow White (2025) premiered in theaters, it was supposed to be another crown jewel in Disney’s live-action lineup following the likes of box office juggernauts Beauty and the Beast (2017) and The Lion King (2019). Instead, it fell short of expectations, barely making a dent at the box office and sparking questions about the future of the studio’s remake strategy, so much that the long-rumored Tangled was suspended indefinitely.

But now, Snow White has a second chance on Disney+.

With a budget in the region of $240–270 million, Snow White‘s theatrical performance ($205.5 million worldwide) was a huge disappointment. But streaming changes the equation. On Disney+, the movie doesn’t have to worry about ticket sales — it just needs to pull in viewers and keep them watching. If it does that, Disney can call it a win.

This move also raises the possibility of a shift in how Disney approaches remakes. Instead of gambling on theaters, future titles like Tangled or Hercules might go straight to streaming (some live-action titles, like 2023’s Peter Pan & Wendy, have already done this).

For families, that could be a welcome change. After all, watching at home removes the risk of spending big on tickets for a film that might not deliver.

Non-live-action remakes such as Pixar’s Soul and Turning Red both skipped theaters entirely and found large, appreciative audiences at home. Snow White could follow the same path. If the numbers are strong, executives may revisit previously shelved projects or retool upcoming ones for Disney+.

In short, Snow White‘s success or failure on Disney+ may do more than salvage a single film. It could determine the fate of Disney’s entire live-action slate. And after the last few years of box office uncertainty, that might be the safest bet the company can make.
