A Space Mountain ride vehicle recently malfunctioned and “went the wrong way” into a maintenance area at Disneyland Resort, causing concern among guests on board. In a video shared on social media, Disney cast members quickly arrived on the scene to handle the situation and evacuate the ride.
The iconic Space Mountain ride, which first opened in Tomorrowland at Disneyland Park in May 1977, is one of the most beloved attractions at Disney parks around the world. For nearly 50 years, guests have boarded the roller coaster-style attraction at Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort, Hong Kong Disneyland, Disneyland Paris Resort, and Tokyo Disney Resort, experiencing thrilling twists and turns in the dark, simulating a journey through outer space. But on this particular day, the ride went off course.
Instagram user @n8thegr8clips shared a video of the incident, which showed the coaster vehicle unexpectedly taking a turn into a maintenance bay instead of continuing on its usual track. According to the Disney Park guest, the vehicle came to a stop in darkness before a blue light illuminated the area, and cast members quickly appeared to assist.

The guests on board were instructed to remain seated while Disney cast members arrived with evacuation platforms. One by one, guests were safely helped out of their vehicles. Luckily, it appears that no one was harmed.
The cause of the malfunction remains unclear. Disneyland Resort rarely provides details about routine ride issues or incidents like this one. However, Space Mountain reopened after a brief delay, and the attraction was operating as usual by the time this article was published on April 29.
