Immersive ‘Star Wars’ Experience Disappears From Disney World Forever

Aerial photos confirm the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser building is being gutted and converted into Walt Disney Imagineering offices, ending any hope of the immersive hotel experience returning to Walt Disney World Resort.

Photographer @bioreconstruct shared images on X (formerly known as Twitter) on February 15 showing construction equipment and vehicles surrounding the former Star Wars hotel outside Disney's Hollywood Studios:

The Brief Life of the Star Wars Hotel

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser opened March 1, 2022, offering two-night immersive experiences costing $4,000-$6,000. The price of a voyage aboard the fictional Halcyon ship included all meals, a dinner show, customized entertainment experiences linked to an app, and a Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge visit.

Initial voyages sold out quickly, but demand collapsed by late 2022. Walt Disney World Resort began offering discounts to DVC members and Annual Passholders to fill empty spots. By March 2023, with a wide-open reservation calendar, Disney announced the permanent closure of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, effective September 30, 2023.

The experience lasted just 18 months and reportedly lost approximately $250 million.

Why It Can't Return

Fans hoped Walt Disney World Resort would convert the building into a regular hotel or restaurant venue. The structure's design makes both options impractical. It contains only 100 tiny, windowless rooms with no pool or standard amenities. The building sits backstage at Disney's Hollywood Studios with no outdoor guest areas—a location Disney typically keeps hidden from visitors.

Imagineering Office Announced

Walt Disney World Resort confirmed in January 2025 that the former Starcruiser would become Imagineering office space. The facility will house teams developing Monsters, Inc. (2001) land at Disney's Hollywood Studios, Pueblo Esperanza at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park, and Disney Villains and Cars (2006) areas at Magic Kingdom Park.

Walt Disney World Resort hasn't provided a completion timeline for the conversion. Some road signs still direct guests toward the nonexistent hotel on backstage roads.

The office conversion permanently eliminates any possibility of reviving the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience in its original form or repurposing the space for guest-facing entertainment.
