‘Star Wars’ Theming Vanishes at Disney World’s Galaxy’s Edge

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is in the midst of exciting transformations, with new experiences like The Magic of Disney Animation on the way and an upcoming Monstropolis area set to open. Yet even as the future is being built, guests continue to enjoy fan-favorite lands like Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

It was in Galaxy’s Edge—specifically aboard Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run—that a group of guests recently found themselves with an unexpected story to tell. Instead of docking at familiar worlds like Batuu or Coruscant, their journey ended in a setting that left more than a few eyebrows raised: an empty field.

For those unfamiliar, Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run places guests in the cockpit of the galaxy’s most famous ship. After meeting the impressively lifelike Hondo Ohnaka in his bustling workshop, riders are assigned one of three roles—pilot, gunner, or engineer—and must work together to smuggle cargo, fend off enemies, and keep the Falcon in one piece. The outcome shifts based on how the crew performs, so each mission is unique.

The immersive queue includes a close-up view of a full-size Millennium Falcon and multiple boarding options, including standby, Lightning Lane, and single-rider. Normally, guests’ voyages wrap up with a thrilling landing—but on this occasion, a technical issue sent the crew into what can only be described as a digital void.

The rare moment was documented on the Walt Disney World Reddit by user CaptainGibb, whose photo of the empty field—seen through the ship’s cockpit windows—garnered over 1,600 upvotes. “It was at the very end so it didn’t matter too much,” they wrote, noting that they never received their scores and that the cast member “looked very confused and immediately called someone on the phone.”

One Reddit commenter with more than 20 years of experience in human subjects simulator research explained that simulators often use a plain background image during boot-up or after a crash. “Chances are it crashed and restarted, but it can happen other ways too,” they shared. The comparison? Like when the lights come on inside Space Mountain—a rare glimpse behind the magic.

Interestingly, even though the field is not an official in-universe Smuggler’s Run location, it still matched the attraction’s style. Soon, there will be even more places to visit aboard the Falcon. Beginning May 22, 2026, a Mandalorian and Grogu-themed mission will debut, timed with the release of Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) movie.

According to Disney Parks Blog: “In this new thrilling storyline, Hondo Ohnaka has gotten wind of a deal going down on Tatooine between ex-Imperial officers and a band of pirates. There’s a generous bounty for their capture, so you’ll borrow the iconic ship and team up with Mando and Grogu to track them down and explore the galaxy.” New destinations—including Coruscant and Endor—will be part of the updated experience.

Until then, Smuggler’s Run will continue to provide both thrilling escapes and, occasionally, rare surprises—whether they’re part of the plan or not.

He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
