‘Stranger Things’ Is Being Retconned Following Divisive Fifth Season

Netflix has finally dropped the first official trailer for Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, the new 3D animated spinoff set between seasons 2 and 3 of the hit sci-fi series.

“Welcome back to Hawkins in the winter of 1985, where the original characters face new monsters — and a paranormal mystery — in this epic animated series,” reads Netflix’s official blurb.

The trailer gives fans a first look at Eleven, Mike, Will, Lucas, Dustin, Max, and more as they face terrifying new threats from the Upside Down. Watch it below:

The series draws from ‘80s Saturday morning cartoons, with showrunner and executive producer Eric Robles citing The Real Ghostbusters as the creative team’s “north star.”

Like that classic show, Tales From ’85 promises to introduce new creatures and adventures while maintaining the spirit of the original series, even if the stories don’t perfectly line up with live-action canon.

However, that’s already proving to be an issue with fans, as none of the characters and monsters from Tales From ’85 were mentioned in the main series from Season 3 onwards.

Though Robles has already admitted that he’s found “loopholes” that have allowed the creative team to bridge the gap between seasons, this new trailer seemingly reveals that the new monsters in the show are mutations of residual matter left behind by the Upside Down.

The new trailer follows a poster release on February 1 that shows the cast in a snowy Hawkins setting, with Eleven using her powers to hold back a menacing Upside Down creature. The poster’s caption—“teaser tomorrow”—was playfully turned upside down.

While the original live-action cast won’t be reprising their roles, voice actors include Brett Gipson as Jim Hopper, Luca Diaz as Mike, Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Elisha Williams as Lucas, Ben Plessala as Will, and Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max. Odessa A’zion, Janeane Garofalo, and Lou Diamond Phillips are also attached in undisclosed roles.

Following the controversial ending of Season 5, Tales From ’85 represents a way for the franchise to continue exploring Hawkins and the Upside Down without the constraints of the live-action series. But fans will have to wait to see whether the animated series captures the same magic that made the original show a cultural phenomenon.

Seasons 1–5 of Stranger Things are now streaming on Netflix.
