Stranger Things star Joe Keery is confused about why people think he might be recording music with global pop star Taylor Swift, although he would be plenty happy to have it happen.

Joe Keery, who portrays former jock bully-turned-parental-figure Steve Harrington on Stranger Things, is unsure where the Taylor Swift collaboration rumors have come from, the actor revealed on a recent episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

According to the Fargo star and musician, Keery has been recording music at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, which is notably where Taylor Swift has been re-recording her past albums, all of which have been released to massive success. The studio has also been utilized by other, lesser-known acts like the Rolling Stones and David Bowie, and was initially constructed for Jimi Hendrix.

Joe Keery told Fallon, “Well, that was a very confusing day because I was just in there with John [Rooney, sound engineer], minding my own business, not doing anything, and then I walked out the door, and it was like a thousand people were standing out there, people looked at me expecting Taylor and were like, ‘Who’s this guy?’”

Apparently, even just seeing a celebrity recording at the same studio as Swift gives rise to rumors that they must be collaborating. While Keery firmly denies it, he also added, “Maybe [the speculation] would generate something, maybe that experience generated something in the universe, but I don’t know.”

While it appears that Taylor Swift and Stranger Things are not crossing over any time soon, it would not be beyond belief for that to eventually happen. Before breaking through to streaming audiences with Stranger Things, Joe Keery was in the Chicago rock band Post Animal and currently performs as a solo act under the name Djo.

While he is certainly better known as the elaborately-coiffed Steve Harrington, he certainly has quite a bit of musical experience, so why couldn’t Swift give him a call sometime?

Joe Keery will return as Steve Harrington in the upcoming, long-delayed Stranger Things season 5, which co-creators the Duffer Brothers have promised will wrap up the stories of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), and Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard). However, there are already a lot of plans for Stranger Things spinoffs, which means that we could see Joe Keery return in some form even when the show is finished, perhaps as a decades-older member of Taylor Swift’s touring band who winds up having to slay some interdimensional monsters with a baseball bat.
