Nearly two decades after Cars first introduced audiences to Lightning McQueen, Disney and Pixar are steering the franchise in a new direction—both visually and physically.
The studio has announced Cars: Lightning Racers, a Disney Jr. animated series slated for 2027. The project reunites Owen Wilson and Larry the Cable Guy as Lightning and Mater, but longtime fans may be surprised by what they see when the engines start.
The series abandons Pixar’s cinematic realism in favor of a more graphic, stylized approach. Early imagery highlights thicker outlines and exaggerated facial expressions, a contrast to the textured desert landscapes and metallic sheen that defined the original films. The aesthetic shift appears designed with younger viewers in mind, echoing the simplified look often seen in franchise merchandise and theme park art.
This isn’t the long-rumored Cars 4. Instead, Lightning Racers expands the universe through television, offering a continuation rather than a theatrical follow-up. Still, the announcement demonstrates that Cars remains a priority brand for Disney nearly 20 years after its 2006 debut.

The move to Disney+ positions the series squarely within the company’s streaming ecosystem, giving the franchise fresh visibility for a new generation of viewers.
But the changes aren’t limited to the screen.
At Walt Disney World, Magic Kingdom is undergoing a sweeping reconfiguration to introduce Piston Peak National Park, an immersive Cars land replacing the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat. The closures marked the end of a long-standing chapter for Frontierland, clearing the way for one of the park’s most ambitious overhauls in years.
Drawing inspiration from America’s national parks, Piston Peak National Park will immerse guests in a landscape of mountains, forests, waterfalls, and geothermal features—all reimagined through the lens of the Cars universe. Unlike Radiator Springs in Disney California Adventure, this land represents a new setting within the franchise’s mythology, created specifically for Florida.
Two major attractions are expected to anchor the expansion. One will reportedly send guests on an off-road rally adventure through rugged terrain. The other is described as a more accessible, family-focused experience that balances scenic storytelling with lighter thrills. Concept art suggests large-scale environments that could redefine the visual skyline of Frontierland.
Together, Lightning Racers and Piston Peak National Park reflect a synchronized strategy: refresh the brand for younger audiences while deepening its footprint in the parks. Cars has evolved from a standalone Pixar film into a multifaceted enterprise encompassing sequels, streaming series, merchandise, and destination-level attractions.
For Lightning McQueen and Mater, the journey is far from over. Between a reimagined animated style and a massive theme park expansion, Disney is ensuring the franchise continues to accelerate into its third decade.
