Halle Bailey, one-half of the musical duo Chloe x Halle and the breakout star of Disney’s The Little Mermaid (2023), has been granted a restraining order against her former partner, citing fears for her and her child’s safety.
According to documents reported by Click Orlando, Bailey alleges that her ex-boyfriend, YouTuber and rapper Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr.—known professionally as DDG—has been abusive during and after their relationship.
“The judge on Tuesday ordered DDG, whose legal name is Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., to stay away from Bailey and their 17-month-old son, Halo, until a June 6 hearing,” Click Orlando reports.
The documents contain disturbing allegations. Click Orlando summarizes Bailey’s claims as follows: “Throughout our relationship, Daryl has been and continues to be physically, verbally, emotionally, and financially abusive towards me. I am seeking orders to protect myself and our son, Halo, from his ongoing abuse.”
Bailey also recalled one harrowing confrontation: “The next thing I knew, things got physical between us. We fought each other, wrestling and tussling. At one point, Darryl was pulling my hair. He then slammed my face on the steering wheel, causing my tooth to get chipped. I then stopped fighting back as I was in a lot of pain.”
The restraining order is temporary pending the June 6 hearing, but the court may extend it up to five years.
Bailey’s rise to stardom came with unprecedented visibility—and challenges. When Disney announced her casting as Ariel in Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid in 2019, the internet lit up with mixed reactions. Fans praised the studio’s move to reimagine the iconic princess, while detractors criticized it for straying from the 1989 animated original.
Despite the polarized reception and online debate, Bailey’s performance earned critical acclaim. Her rendition of “Part of Your World” was widely seen as a standout moment in the film.
In December 2023, Bailey gave birth to her son, Halo, marking a new chapter in her life. At the time, she was in a relationship with DDG, but the couple ended things in October 2024 after two years of dating. DDG publicly stated that they would remain “best friends” to co-parent Halo. However, the legal proceedings now paint a far more troubled picture of their dynamic.
Despite intense scrutiny online, The Little Mermaid proved a commercial success for Disney. The film brought in more than $570 million globally, including a strong domestic showing during its Memorial Day opening and a sustained run over the summer.
Bailey’s career has continued to flourish post-Mermaid. In 2023, she appeared in The Line and The Color Purple. She’ll next star in You & Me & Tuscany (2026) and Jesse Eisenberg’s forthcoming comedy. She was also attached to Michel Gondry’s Golden, though the project was shelved indefinitely by Universal Pictures.
While this moment marks a deeply personal and painful chapter in her life, Bailey continues to build a portfolio defined by talent, resilience, and range.
