The Polar Express (2004) has become a beloved holiday tradition for families, despite a somewhat bumpy start. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks in multiple roles, the film faced early criticism for its motion-capture animation, which some found unsettling. But over time, its heart-warming story and sense of wonder turned it into a Christmas classic. Based on Chris Van Allsburg’s 1985 picture book, the movie takes viewers on a magical journey to the North Pole.
“Get up, get on, and get ready for the ride of your life!” the official synopsis from Warner Bros. reads. “It’s Christmas Eve, and you’re about to roller-coaster up and down mountains, slip-slide over ice fields, teeter across mile-high bridges, and be served hot chocolate by singing waiters more astonishing than any you can imagine.”

The story centers around the adventure of a young boy who begins to believe in the spirit of Christmas aboard a mysterious train. Between the enigmatic conductor, a ghostly hobo, and a surprise visit from Santa, The Polar Express packs plenty of holiday charm into one unforgettable ride.
The magic of the movie has inspired real-life experiences as well. Back in 2007, SeaWorld Orlando launched The Polar Express Experience, a motion simulator that let guests experience the movie’s snowy magic first-hand. Unfortunately, it closed in 2015, leaving fans of the ride a little disappointed.

Luckily, the spirit of the The Polar Express lives on. This year, per Birmingham Live, the festive train experience will return to the UK, with Vintage Trains re-creating the magic for families. Departing from Birmingham Moor Street from November 23 to December 23, this adventure invites passengers to step aboard and relive the enchanting journey from the film. Expect classic moments, festive sights and sounds, and—most importantly—steaming mugs of hot chocolate! Don’t forget your pajamas, either, because this is one cozy Christmas outing.
The real question is, will Santa make an appearance? Of course, he will! Families can look forward to meeting the jolly man himself, along with plenty of The Polar Express merchandise to keep as souvenirs. Tickets are available on Vintage Trains’ official website, and here’s how they describe the experience:
“Join us at Vintage Trains for festive fun this Christmas! THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride is returning to Vintage Trains again in 2024 with the magic of the 2004 motion picture being theatrically re-created so you and your family can be immersed in the sights, sounds, and intrigue of this classic children’s tale. Prepare to be surrounded by the magic and wonder of the Christmas season!”
But that’s not the only news.
Rumors of a sequel to The Polar Express have been making the rounds. Earlier this year, producer Gary Goetzman said in an interview with ComicBook.com that a follow-up film is being “worked out.” However, there’s been no official announcement since, so fans will have to wait and see if this magical adventure continues.
Whether you’re boarding the train for the first time or have been a long-time fan, The Polar Express remains a story of believing in the magic of the season. And who knows—maybe there’s another ride in store for all of us!
