Thunder Falls Terrace did not close for a refurbishment. It is not coming back in a few months with a fresh coat of paint and an updated menu. Universal Orlando confirmed this week that the longtime Jurassic Park quick-service restaurant at Islands of Adventure is permanently closed, with the location scheduled to be completely transformed into an entirely new dining concept that will open as the park's new signature full-service restaurant in 2027.
For guests who have eaten there over the years, who made the outdoor seating above the Jurassic Park River Adventure splash zone part of their Islands of Adventure ritual, that is a real end to something. The rotisserie chicken and ribs that defined the menu, the particular experience of sitting outside while boats full of guests barreled toward the drop below, that version of the Jurassic Park dining experience is over.
The closure also arrives at a moment when the Jurassic Park land is already operating under significant construction pressure. River Adventure itself has been closed since January for a major refurbishment and is not scheduled to return until November 20, 2026. Jurassic Outfitters nearby has also been seeing work. The Thunder Falls closure adds another layer to a land that is simultaneously one of Islands of Adventure's most iconic areas and one of its most actively changing ones right now.
What Universal Actually Confirmed
Universal's announcement established two things clearly. Thunder Falls Terrace is permanently closed. The transformed venue will open in 2027 as the new signature full-service restaurant for Islands of Adventure.
Everything else, the name, the theme, the menu concept, the specific design direction, has not been disclosed. Universal is not in the habit of announcing dining concepts far in advance, so the 2027 window is the only confirmed detail beyond the closure itself.
The context that makes the 2027 timing particularly interesting involves Mythos Restaurant, currently the primary full-service dining destination at Islands of Adventure, which is expected to close in 2027 as Universal moves forward with redeveloping The Lost Continent. Universal has not officially stated that the Thunder Falls transformation is designed to replace Mythos as the park's full-service anchor. But the designation of the new Thunder Falls restaurant as the park's “new signature full-service restaurant” makes the intention fairly clear. The park will not be left without a proper sit-down dining option. The address changes, from The Lost Continent to Jurassic Park, but the function carries over.
What Is Keeping the Jurassic Park Land Fed Right Now
With Thunder Falls Terrace gone and River Adventure closed, Jurassic Park is operating with a reduced footprint. Guests looking for food in the land have The Burger Digs and Pizza Predattoria available, both of which remain open as the area's operating quick-service options during the construction period.
They are not Thunder Falls. Guests who specifically made the rotisserie chicken or the outdoor river-view seating part of their visit are working with a different set of options until 2027. But the basics are covered.
River Adventure Is Being Rebuilt, Not Replaced
The headline finding from those photos is that Universal appears to be restoring the original Jurassic Park (1993) experience rather than converting the ride into a Jurassic World attraction the way Universal Studios Hollywood did when it replaced the classic opening sequence with a Mosasaurus screen scene.
The iconic Ultrasaur from the attraction's opening section is being rebuilt. Aerial images show the dinosaur's familiar exterior removed, exposing the internal armature, with a new white metal neck structure installed. The Ultrasaur had developed a notable reputation over the years for limited neck movement, becoming something of a running joke among repeat visitors who described it as permanently stiff or injured-looking. The current refurbishment appears targeted at solving exactly that problem while preserving the original scene.
The baby Stegosaurus nearby is also receiving work, with portions of its facial covering removed to improve its moving components. Its adult counterpart has been temporarily moved backstage, presumably for similar attention.
A partial water test has also been observed in sections of the waterway, which is typically a later-stage step in a lengthy refurbishment. With November 20 as the return date, the appearance of water testing in July suggests the project is progressing well through its timeline. Boats remain staged both on the attraction and backstage, pointing toward continued system testing in the months ahead.
What is happening inside the main show building remains publicly unknown. Universal has characterized the closure as planned maintenance without specifying what changes guests should expect inside the larger enclosed sections of the ride.
Jurassic Park in November Is Going to Feel Very Different From Jurassic Park Right Now
When River Adventure reopens on November 20, guests who visit the Jurassic Park land in the weeks that follow will encounter something the land has not offered for most of 2026: a fully operational anchor attraction. What they will not immediately encounter is Thunder Falls Terrace. That transformation runs through 2027.
The combination of a rebuilt River Adventure and an eventually transformed full-service restaurant in the same land positions Jurassic Park for what looks like a genuinely upgraded version of itself by 2027 or 2028. The animatronics on River Adventure are expected to move better and be more reliably operational. The new restaurant, whatever it becomes, will offer something the quick-service Thunder Falls never could. Both changes are investments in a land that has been part of Islands of Adventure since day one.
For guests visiting before November, River Adventure is closed and Thunder Falls is gone. The Burger Digs and Pizza Predattoria are the dining options. The Jurassic Park atmosphere remains but the land is operating on partial capacity that reflects an area in active transformation.
