Universal Modifies Safety Language Tied to Epic Universe Accident

Epic Universe was created to represent the future of themed entertainment, a place where innovation and imagination collide. Yet behind the excitement surrounding Universal Orlando Resort’s newest park lies a tragedy that has forced many to pause and reflect on the responsibility that comes with pushing ride technology to new limits.

On September 17, Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, a 32-year-old guest, rode Stardust Racers and soon after became unconscious. Despite emergency response efforts, Zavala later died. Universal stated that the ride functioned as designed, but that assurance has not eased growing concerns about how fatal injuries could occur during a standard ride cycle.

According to official findings, Zavala died from multiple blunt impact injuries. Beyond that determination, officials have offered little explanation. Without clarity on how those injuries were sustained, uncertainty has filled the silence, prompting scrutiny from disability advocates, theme park fans, and the public alike.

Complicating matters further was a change made to an incident report submitted to the state. An initial version referenced pre-existing conditions, wording that was later removed following discussions with state staff. The final report listed the incident simply as a fatality. While the adjustment was allowed, it raised questions about why the descriptor appeared in the first place and why it was later deemed unnecessary.

Zavala was born with spinal muscular atrophy and relied on a wheelchair. His family and their attorneys have made it clear they do not believe his disability was linked to his death. They argue that the attraction’s posted warnings were vague and failed to clearly identify mobility-related restrictions, leaving guests without enough information to accurately assess risk.

Following Zavala’s death, Universal updated its ride guidelines to state that guests using mobility devices must be able to walk independently to ride Stardust Racers and certain other attractions. Although Universal has not connected the policy update directly to the incident, it changed how many people viewed the company’s earlier safety messaging.

Large theme parks like Universal operate under a self-reporting system rather than routine state inspections. After the incident, Universal invited state inspectors to observe the ride’s testing and safety checks. Those inspectors reportedly agreed that the attraction was operating properly, and no permanent records were retained from their visit.

Meanwhile, law enforcement and medical examiner records have not been released publicly due to an ongoing criminal investigation. This has left both the public and the family waiting for information that may take significant time to surface.

For many, this tragedy underscores a broader issue: trust. Guests enter theme parks believing systems are in place to protect them. When that trust is shaken, it affects more than a single ride or park. As Epic Universe moves forward, this incident remains a reminder that progress and responsibility must go hand in hand—and that behind every report is a real family experiencing profound loss.
