Universal Studios Florida looks very different than it did when guests first walked through its gates in 1990.
Most of the park's original attractions disappeared long ago. However, Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show managed to survive decades of expansion, replacements, and changing entertainment trends.
Then, after nearly 36 years, Universal temporarily pulled the plug.
The classic show closed on May 12, 2026, with its previous version giving its final performance on May 11. Universal promised something new would eventually take its place, but exactly what guests will find when the theater reopens remains unclear.
And with Halloween Horror Nights 35 already underway, fans are still waiting for answers.
Universal Is Reimagining a 1990 Original
Unlike other recent Universal Studios Florida closures, the Horror Make-Up Show isn't supposed to disappear permanently.
Universal announced that the attraction would undergo a reimagining before returning later in 2026. Current schedules point toward winter 2026 for its reopening.
The updated production will incorporate classic and modern horror properties while retaining the comedic and irreverent spirit that helped make the original show popular.
Beyond that description, Universal hasn't revealed many specifics.
We don't know exactly which horror franchises will appear, how much of the previous show will remain, or how significantly Universal is changing the theater experience.
That's why describing the project as a replacement can get complicated. The Horror Make-Up Show is returning, but the version guests watched before May 12 is finished.
Whatever comes next will represent a new era for the opening-day attraction.
Fans Are Still Waiting During HHN 35
Halloween Horror Nights seemed like a natural target for the show's return.
The annual event is built around horror movies, monsters, elaborate effects, and scares. A reimagined Horror Make-Up Show could have provided another entertainment option inside Universal Studios Florida during an already packed event. Of course, it should be noted that the Horror Make-Up Show doesn't normally run during Horror Nights, so this would've been a special addition rather than a normal offering.

HHN 35 began on August 28, and the attraction remains closed as September approaches its halfway point.
Universal has made one noticeable exterior change.
The theater's marquee now displays a “Welcome To HHN 35” message, tying the building into the event even though guests can't enter the attraction itself.
That change hasn't come with any additional information about construction or a reopening date.
What Happens Next?
Universal still has time to meet its previously announced 2026 timeline.
A winter reopening could put the attraction's return sometime later this fall or toward the end of the year. Until Universal provides an exact date, however, guests will have to continue waiting.
The bigger question surrounds what they'll eventually find inside.
Universal has spent the last several years making aggressive changes throughout its Orlando theme parks. Some longtime attractions have disappeared permanently, while others are being transformed for a new generation.
The Horror Make-Up Show falls into that second category.
Its 36-year history isn't ending completely, but the version generations of Universal guests knew has taken its final bow.
Now Universal has to reveal what's replacing it—and whether the reimagined experience can preserve what made this opening-day attraction last for more than three decades.
