Universal Orlando Resort is preparing to unleash another season of Halloween Horror Nights, but one returning option could make the event slightly less frightening for some guests.
The “Deathly Afraid” necklace has returned to Universal Studios Florida for Halloween Horror Nights 2026.
First introduced last year, the accessory created an unusual option at an event built around scaring people. Guests can wear the necklace to signal that they would prefer scareactors not directly target them in common areas.
For 2026, Universal is bringing the concept back with a new design tied to the 35th anniversary.
How the “Deathly Afraid” Necklace Works
The light-up necklace costs $20 and can be found at Five & Dime and the Halloween Horror Nights Tribute Store at Universal Studios Florida.
The strap features a black and red design with Halloween Horror Nights branding, while the transparent light-up piece celebrates the event's “Never Go Alone 35th Anniversary.” Once activated, it lights up red.
That glow has a purpose beyond appearance.
It signals to scareactors in common areas, such as scare zones, that the person wearing it would prefer not to receive direct scares.
However, there are limits to what guests should expect.
Guests Still Have to Face the Haunted Houses
The necklace isn't a way to completely remove scares from Halloween Horror Nights.
Universal doesn't guarantee that wearers will avoid every scare, and guests can't activate the necklace inside haunted houses. Once someone steps inside one of the 10 houses, the regular experience applies.
That makes the offering more of a middle ground.
Halloween Horror Nights fans who want every possible scare can experience the event as usual. Meanwhile, guests who enjoy horror, elaborate environments, haunted houses, food, and the overall Halloween atmosphere can potentially reduce some of the unexpected interactions while walking through the park.
The concept has naturally generated debate because roaming scareactors and scare zones have long been a major part of Halloween Horror Nights.
Still, Universal is bringing the option back for another year.
A Massive Halloween Horror Nights Lineup Awaits
Halloween Horror Nights 2026 officially begins August 28 and runs on select nights through November 1.
This year's 10-house lineup includes Stranger Things 5, Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness, Hellraiser, Evil Dead Burn, and Sinners.
Universal's original creations include Jack & Oddfellow: Chaos & Control, H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: A Halloween Fright-Tacular!, Madlands: Caged Cannibals, Cybergoria, and Invasion: Alien Abduction.
With opening night only days away, Universal is putting the finishing touches on another massive Halloween season.
And for guests who want to experience the event with fewer scares outside the houses, the “Deathly Afraid” necklace is once again part of the equation.
