Universal’s 7th Park Could Change Everything—Built Next to Disney and Eyeing the U.K.

Here’s What We Know About This 7th Major Theme Park Coming Soon

It began with whispers amongst Universal fans. Then came the blurry concept art leaks, the speculative blog posts, and the hopeful chatter from theme park fans.

But now? It’s official—and it’s huge. Universal Destinations & Experiences is building a new world-class theme park and resort in the heart of the United Kingdom.

And it’s not just any park. This billion-pound project could forever change the balance of power in Europe’s theme park industry.

But why now? And why here—just 400 kilometers from Disneyland Paris? Is this the start of a full-blown theme park rivalry on European soil?

A Long-Awaited Return to Europe for Universal

After more than a decade of staying out of the European market, Universal is planting its flag once again—this time in Bedford, UK. Pending planning approval, the park is expected to break ground soon and officially open its gates in 2031. The reveal came with sweeping concept art showing vibrant new lands, immersive rides, and next-generation experiences—every bit the match for its American cousins in Florida and California.

NEW: Here’s a first look at official concept art for the Universal theme park planned for the U.K. The resort is set to open as early as 2031 pending final planning approvals by local government officials.

A New Era for Bedford—and the UK

Universal’s UK project is more than just a theme park. It’s an ambitious entertainment resort complex that includes a hotel, retail and dining districts, and full-blown resort infrastructure. With it comes a promise of serious economic growth:

  • 20,000 construction jobs

  • 8,000 permanent roles upon opening

  • Nearly £50 billion in projected economic impact

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the announcement “a milestone moment for Bedford and the nation,” while Chancellor Rachel Reeves described the deal as “proof that the UK is open for business and bold ideas.”

Why Disneyland Paris Should Be Paying Attention

Just a few hours away sits Disneyland Paris, which has held dominance over the European theme park scene for decades. But Universal’s arrival poses a direct challenge to that legacy.

Disneyland Paris has been undergoing expansion efforts of its own, but Universal’s announcement throws down the gauntlet. With Epic Universe set to open in Orlando next month and the company launching new concepts like a family-friendly park in Texas and a year-round Halloween Horror Nights experience in Las Vegas, Universal is evolving in a way that even Disney isn’t quite matching.

The Bedford park will be Universal’s first in the UK and first in Europe—making it both a geographic and strategic move. With the rise of immersive, story-driven entertainment and technology-infused experiences, Universal is no longer content to play second fiddle in the theme park wars.

“We offer the most innovative, immersive and popular entertainment experiences in the world,” said Mike Cavanagh, President of Comcast. “This new resort in the UK is a bold next step in delivering on that promise.”

What Could the Park Include?

Though Universal has yet to reveal specifics about what rides or IPs will be included, speculation is rampant. Will the Wizarding World of Harry Potter make its UK debut in theme park form? Could guests see attractions based on Jurassic World, Minions, How to Train Your Dragon, or even Super Nintendo World?

For now, Universal is staying tight-lipped, saying only that the experience will be “thrilling, immersive, and uniquely Universal.”

Still, fans are already drawing comparisons to the upcoming Epic Universe park in Orlando, suggesting a UK counterpart might share similar DNA.

A Universal Future Shaped by Competition

The deeper story here isn’t just about Universal building a theme park—it’s about shifting the center of gravity in global themed entertainment.

For decades, Disney has set the standard. But Universal’s aggressive global expansion signals that the industry is evolving fast. No longer just a challenger, Universal is becoming a dominant player—and this new park in Bedford may be the clearest sign yet.

Whether you’re a theme park fan, a local resident, or a curious traveler, one thing is clear: the next few years will redefine what it means to experience magic and adventure in Europe.

And as Universal steps into Disneyland Paris’s backyard, one question echoes louder than the rest: is Europe big enough for both giants?

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
