Guests heading to Dollywood this summer should be aware of a significant update affecting several areas of the resort destination.

Dollywood Parks & Resorts is preparing to phase out cash payments at three of its properties, meaning some visitors may soon find themselves unable to use paper money during their vacation.

The update does not currently impact the main Dollywood theme park, which will continue accepting cash. However, Dollywood’s Splash Country water park, DreamMore Resort and Spa, and HeartSong Lodge & Resort are all set to operate under new cashless policies beginning this spring and summer.

Employees at those locations will no longer accept cash once the changes officially take effect. Splash Country will become the first property to transition on May 16 when the water park reopens for the season.

Located beside the flagship Dollywood theme park, the now 35-acre water park has been welcoming families since 2001. Attractions, including Mountain Waves, Wild River Falls, and Downbound Float Trip, have helped make it a popular seasonal stop for guests visiting the Smoky Mountains.

Less than a month later, on June 11, DreamMore Resort and Spa and HeartSong Lodge & Resort will follow with their own cashless conversion.

DreamMore opened in 2015 as Dollywood’s first official resort hotel. Designed around the warmth and hospitality associated with Dolly Parton’s East Tennessee roots, the property includes more than 300 rooms, onsite dining, a lazy river pool area, transportation to the parks, and exclusive guest perks. HeartSong Lodge arrived much later in 2023 and expanded Dollywood’s resort offerings even further.

Once the new policies begin, guests will still be able to use credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and similar mobile payment methods throughout the affected locations.

Dollywood has also confirmed that guests carrying cash won’t be completely out of options. “Cash to Card” kiosks will be installed on the property, allowing visitors to transfer cash funds onto prepaid cards for use during their stay.

Those prepaid cards can also be used outside the resort, anywhere prepaid cards are accepted, and Dollywood says guests won’t be charged any loading fees. Visitors traveling with children or large groups may want to set up spending cards ahead of time instead of waiting to use the kiosks after arriving.

According to Dollywood, the transition is aimed at streamlining operations and improving the guest experience. Cashless systems generally move faster at checkout locations while reducing the amount of physical cash employees need to handle daily.

The company says the overall goal is to create a “smoother” and “safer” environment across the participating properties.

The decision also places Dollywood alongside a growing number of entertainment companies making similar moves. Disney and Universal have both expanded cashless payment options in recent years, while stadiums and concert venues across the country have adopted similar systems.

At the same time, some guests may see drawbacks. Cash remains a preferred budgeting tool for many travelers because it creates a hard spending limit. Digital payments can make it easier to lose track of expenses during a vacation.

Others may simply prefer cash out of habit or convenience. Older guests, unbanked visitors, and those less familiar with mobile payments may find the transition frustrating despite the availability of prepaid kiosks. For longtime Dollywood fans, the update could also feel slightly at odds with the resort’s reputation for maintaining a more traditional and community-focused atmosphere compared to larger corporate competitors.

Guests planning a trip this summer should double-check which areas of the resort they’ll be visiting before arriving. Cash is still accepted at the main Dollywood theme park, but anyone spending time at Splash Country, DreamMore Resort, or HeartSong Lodge should prepare to rely on cards or mobile payments instead.

The resort’s Smoky Mountain charm and Dolly Parton-inspired identity remain firmly intact — even if the payment process is changing behind the scenes.

He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
