Following a recent and disturbing incident aboard a Walt Disney World ferryboat, a quiet but telling change has been observed in guest transportation procedures: all trash receptacles have been removed from the Magic Kingdom ferries. While Disney has made no formal statement regarding the disappearance of these once-standard fixtures, guest accounts and independent reporting suggest the move may be tied to a crash that left several passengers injured and alarmed.

Sudden Safety Shift
Frequent visitors to Walt Disney World may have noticed the absence of trash cans on board the ferryboats traveling between the Transportation and Ticket Center (TTC) and Magic Kingdom. Once positioned near pillars and access points to help guests keep the decks clean, the bins have been completely removed — with no replacement and no explanation.
The timing of their disappearance appears far from coincidental. Sources familiar with Disney operations and transportation safety, along with guest testimonies, strongly indicate that the removal followed a recent and serious ferryboat crash that occurred on July 30th.
Guests Describe “Jarring” Impact

During the early evening hours of July 30th, a ferry transporting Magic Kingdom guests crashed into a dock while reportedly traveling at high speed. The park had closed early due to approaching severe weather, sending a rush of guests toward transportation hubs. According to multiple witnesses, the boat struck the dock without any warning, leading to chaos on board.
Deanna D., a parkgoer who was on the ferry with her husband and two young children, shared her account with People magazine:
“It was like being on the frickin’ Titanic. People were thinking the boat was going down.”
Deanna described seeing guests fall, including a pregnant woman, and children thrown forward by the force of the impact. Her own family was split between decks at the time, heightening her panic as she tried to assess their safety in the immediate aftermath. She later reported hand and foot injuries sustained during the incident.
She criticized the lack of communication from Disney crew members both before and after the crash, stating that “not a single announcement” was made prior to impact or as guests exited the vessel.
Another rider, Tami Hackett of Houston, recounted similar experiences to Fox 35 Orlando, including her granddaughters being thrown from a stroller.
“Suddenly we crashed into something and we all went flying forward, falling… A lot of people were screaming and really hurt bad.”
Hackett said there was no staff guidance post-crash, only an EMT on the dock to evaluate injuries.
Trash Cans Potentially Involved in Injuries
While Disney has not released a statement identifying a cause for the crash, some guests have drawn attention to a potentially overlooked hazard: unsecured trash cans.
Several eyewitnesses claim that trash cans on board were thrown loose during the collision, with one report alleging that a child was struck or pinned by one of the metal bins. Although these accounts remain unverified, the correlation between the ferry crash and the swift, unexplained removal of all trash cans from ferryboats has raised questions about whether the bins became dangerous projectiles during the event.
In a report from Blog Mickey, it was confirmed that no trash cans could be found on any of the ferryboats in the days following the incident. These receptacles were once a permanent fixture, located at key traffic areas on the boats for convenience — and presumably considered safe.
Guests are now being instructed to discard any trash prior to boarding or after exiting the vessel.
Official Silence

Despite guest injuries and mounting public concern, Disney has remained notably silent about the incident. There have been no acknowledgments of the crash on official channels, nor any safety advisories issued to guests.
Similarly, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) has not commented publicly. However, both Orange and Osceola County fire departments confirmed mutual aid responses to the incident when asked by People.
Given the scale of the crash and the number of guests on board, some are questioning why no public statement has been issued, especially as operational changes — such as the trash can removal — have been enacted in apparent response.
A Breach in the Magic?
Incidents involving Disney transportation systems are rare, but not unprecedented. However, for longtime Disney loyalists like Deanna, the lack of transparency and perceived failure in safety protocols have shaken her trust in the brand.
“I’ve been going to Disney for 25 years and I can’t see myself going back. Because now I’m horrified.”
While her family escaped without serious harm, Deanna said she’s still dealing with the emotional toll of the experience and the sense that Disney was ill-prepared to handle the emergency.
While Walt Disney World has long been celebrated for its operational efficiency and guest-first reputation, the lack of communication following this incident — combined with the abrupt operational changes — has left many wondering if guest safety is being prioritized behind the scenes.
