Widower Speaks Out, Demands More After Wife Dies During Disney World Trip

A heartbreaking legal battle is unfolding following the death of Dr. Kanokporn Tangsuan, a 42-year-old medical doctor from NYU Langone in New York City, who suffered a fatal allergic reaction while visiting Walt Disney World Resort in October 2023.

Tangsuan had traveled to Florida for a conference and spent time exploring Disney Springs with her husband, Jeffrey Piccolo, and his mother, Jackie Piccolo. The evening took a devastating turn when she experienced acute anaphylactic shock shortly after dining at Raglan Road Irish Pub, a third-party restaurant located at Disney Springs.

According to a lawsuit filed by Mr. Piccolo, his wife—who had severe allergies to dairy and nuts—had taken multiple precautions when ordering her food. Court documents state that she inquired about safe menu options, received multiple reassurances from staff, and was served dishes that included a vegan shepherd’s pie and corn fritters. While some plates arrived with allergy flags, others reportedly did not.

Following the meal, Tangsuan went shopping separately from her family. When she became unresponsive to phone calls, concerns mounted. She was later discovered near Planet Hollywood in anaphylactic shock and had already self-administered an epinephrine pen. Rushed to the hospital, she tragically passed away before her husband and mother-in-law could reach her. An autopsy later confirmed the presence of elevated levels of nuts and dairy in her system, and her death was ruled accidental.

Now, Mr. Piccolo is suing multiple entities, including Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, Disney Springs, and Great Irish Pubs Florida Inc. (which operates Raglan Road), seeking damages exceeding $50,000 and a jury trial. A recent motion filed by Piccolo requests that Raglan Road disclose all recipes and ingredients for the meals his late wife consumed, a move that could further shape the trajectory of the case.

Initially, The Walt Disney Company sought arbitration rather than a trial, citing the fine print in the user agreement Piccolo had accepted when subscribing to Disney+, and later purchasing EPCOT tickets.

Disney, which does not own or operate Raglan Road, issued a statement emphasizing its role in the case. “We are deeply saddened by the family’s loss and understand their grief,” a Disney spokesperson said, via CBS News. “Given that this restaurant is neither owned nor operated by Disney, we are merely defending ourselves against the plaintiff’s attorney’s attempt to include us in their lawsuit against the restaurant.”

However, in response to the uniqueness of the case, Disney shifted its stance.

“At Disney, we strive to put humanity above all other considerations,” said Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro (via CBS News). “With such unique circumstances as the ones in this case, we believe this situation warrants a sensitive approach to expedite a resolution for the family who have experienced such a painful loss. As such, we’ve decided to waive our right to arbitration and have the matter proceed in court.”

Peter Giattino, an attorney representing the family and also Tangsuan’s cousin, strongly condemned Disney’s original arbitration attempt, calling it “shocking and absurd,” per CBS.

Meanwhile, Raglan Road has since updated its allergen notice on its official website, clarifying its policy. The disclaimer now states, “Kindly note that we are NOT a Gluten/Allergen free restaurant. We CANNOT guarantee that any dish we prepare is free from Gluten/Allergen or free from cross contact. Guests must notify their server of any allergy-friendly requests.”

The statement also notes that while a manager will discuss allergy concerns, guests must ultimately decide what they feel safe consuming.

As the case moves forward, it continues to shed light on the complexities of food allergy safety in dining establishments and corporate accountability within theme parks. We will provide updates as new developments emerge.
