50 Dollar Gift Card Can’t Undo an Hour Trapped on Disney’s Monorail

When you're at Walt Disney World, every second is supposed to be magical. But for one group of guests, time stood still—and not in the dreamy, cinematic way. On January 20, one of the Monorail trains running the EPCOT line suddenly stopped just past the Contemporary Resort and didn’t move again for more than an hour.

It didn’t take long for the internet to find out. Instagram user @jenna_doesdisney shared a quick clip with the hashtags #epcot and #monorail, writing that the train had been stalled for over an hour and caused major delays in the area. Followers chimed in with confusion, some saying it “should have been them” stuck up there for the drama.

Meanwhile, professional wrestler Joey Janela was also trapped in the Monorail and tweeted his own version of the night. “We were stuck on the Monorail for an hour tonight at Disney,” he posted. “Luckily they hooked us up with $50 gift cards,” which he used for a full-on EPCOT food crawl: crab sliders, chili poblano tacos, and a sushi doughnut—all devoured in record time.

But for those who didn’t get to turn their delay into a food festival, it was just a long, uncomfortable experience. Guests reported having to leave the station and take buses instead, unsure if the Monorail would start moving again anytime soon.

As iconic as Disney’s Monorail system is, it’s not without its flaws. Over the years, breakdowns have happened—doors not opening, unexpected stops mid-route, and more. Still, guests expect communication. When that communication doesn’t come quickly, it amplifies the stress.

Thankfully, the Monorail was back up and running the next day. No injuries were reported, and everyone eventually got to where they needed to be. But one thing is certain—being stuck in a Monorail isn’t something you forget.

Whether you’re a wrestler with a sushi craving or a family trying to get to dinner, an hour on a frozen Monorail can turn your Disney evening upside down.
