Fans Rally Behind Possible Season 3 of ‘Our Flag Means Death’

The series Our Flag Means Death has carved its niche in the television landscape with an impressive 95% critic score and a 96% average audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This reception can largely be attributed to its engaging storytelling and the charismatic performances led by Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi. Critics praised the show for its clever humor and relatable characters, encapsulating both comedy and romantic elements in a way that resonates with diverse audiences.

Its comedic premise revolves around Stede Bonnet, who leaves behind a comfortable life to embrace a chaotic existence as a pirate. The blend of swashbuckling adventures and romantic undertones, particularly between Stede and Blackbeard, adds depth to their characters. This mix allows the series to explore queer themes in a comedic setting, establishing Our Flag Means Death as a significant player in LGBTQ+ representation in media.

As the series progressed, it developed a passionate fanbase that extended its reach far beyond its initial launch. The story’s relatability and humor encouraged viewers to rally behind it, creating a cult following reminiscent of other sleeper hits like Ted Lasso. This organic growth through word-of-mouth reflects how well audiences connected with Our Flag Means Death, urging more viewers to tune in and become part of the adventure.

Fans have found connection and delight in seeing characters who are not only multidimensional but also openly explore their identities within the whimsical, surprisingly open-minded world of 18th-century piracy.

Set during the Golden Age of Piracy, this romantic comedy takes viewers back to 1717, a time rich in nautical lore and adventurous exploits. The historical backdrop is vividly brought to life through captivating visuals and clever writing, enhancing the authenticity of the characters’ experiences. As the story unfolds aboard the ship Revenge, audiences are treated to a unique perspective on piracy, blending historical elements with comedic flair.

At the heart of Our Flag Means Death are its distinct characters. Stede Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby, embodies the “Gentleman Pirate,” struggling to adapt to the ruthless world of piracy. His contrasting relationship with Blackbeard, portrayed by Taika Waititi, offers both comedic tension and romantic intrigue. The supporting cast, including Native Foad’s Lucius and Samson Kayo’s Oluwande, adds layers to the narrative, creating a community of misfits navigating the challenges of pirate life while accepting their differences.

The creative vision behind Our Flag Means Death stems from David Jenkins and his talented team. With executive producer Taika Waititi lending his unique perspective, the series enjoys a harmony of creativity aimed at not just entertaining but also challenging norms. This inventive approach has helped the show forge a path through conventional genre boundaries, addressing themes of identity and acceptance while keeping the audience in stitches.

To say the end of Season 2, with its rather extraordinary cliffhanger, led to an emotional response from fans would be an understatement.

The official cancellation of Our Flag Means Death being confirmed by series creator David Jenkins on social media did not help matters. In fact, it whipped up a frenzy of fan support.

Fans banded together to initiate the #SaveOFMD campaign and make their desire for renewal of the series from Warner Bros. more than well-known. This grassroots effort saw fans engaging in creative activities to keep the mission alive, exemplifying the fervor that Our Flag Means Death has sparked.

Social media platforms became the battleground for this campaign, with fans generating hashtags and organizing petitions, garnering nearly 90,000 signatures and prominent social media campaigns that reached wide audiences. Ads lit up at Times Square following successful crowdfunding campaigns run by fans, and a swell of fan support even got the cast and crew involved.

However, challenges loomed large — particularly the disappointment of Jenkins’s official announcement that network executives had definitively said no.

Not even that has stopped the forward momentum of the show’s fans, however.

David Jenkin’s Open Invitation to Networks

In recent tweets on X/Twitter, showrunner David Jenkins has hinted at the possibility of reviving Our Flag Means Death on the one-year anniversary of Season 2’s premiere:

David Jenkins: Think that’s it’s the pinnacle of luck to get to make something with people you like. And getting to share it with people who appreciate it.

His openness to consider another season has reignited hope among fans, especially in light of their passionate advocacy for the show. Jenkins’ remarks suggest that while there are no official plans, the opportunity for future storytelling remains tantalizingly available — and he’s leaving an open invitation out for any networks interested in adopting their crew:

@rose_reluctant: So happy to be on this ride you built. I hope it gets to go round the track one more time. ❤️

David Jenkins: There are no official plans to go again, but I know most if not all of us would do it again in a heartbeat. We miss each other and this world.

There’s a sizable time jump between S2 and a theoretical S3. Until it’s ridiculous or totally impossible, I will never rule out a return to this show. If ever a network’s buying I’m in.

Should a third season become a reality, there are countless avenues the narrative could explore. The emotional arcs of Stede and Blackbeard could deepen, focusing on long-term relationship dynamics and character growth. Given the show’s blend of humor and romance, Jenkins could effectively delve into mature themes exploring commitment and partnership set against the chaotic world of piracy.

All in all, fans promised Jenkins (and everyone involved in the making of the series), that ultimately “we’ll be here, ready to do anything we can”:

So relieved to hear this, honestly. There’s no amount of time between what we have and what could come later that would be too long. We’ll be here, ready to do anything we can, always loving the beautiful world and characters you all created 🫡🏴‍☠️❤️

The sustained support from fans plays a crucial role in the revival potential of shows like Our Flag Means Death. As seen in the recent resurgence of other canceled shows, it becomes clear that sincere, ongoing enthusiasm can impact decisions in the industry. Jenkins’ acknowledgment of this commitment underscores the recognition that dedicated fanbases can shape the future of beloved series, providing not just a voice but a rallying cry for stories waiting to be told.

The journey of Our Flag Means Death is far from over, and as fans continue to raise the flag with pride, the prospect of seeing their favorite characters embark on new adventures remains alive. Whether through social media efforts, petitions, or simply sharing their favorite moments with friends, fans are (and have been) a critical part of the series’ legacy: love, acceptance, and the unyielding spirit of adventure.

The networks will decide now whether the next chapter in this adventure will get its time in the sun.
