‘Pirates’ Star Johnny Depp’s Big Win Sparks Fan Celebration

Johnny Depp, celebrated for his unforgettable portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean series, is set to make a significant return to the global stage. His latest directorial venture, Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness (2024), will be showcased at the upcoming Rome Film Festival, bringing the actor and filmmaker back into the spotlight.

This eagerly anticipated biopic, directed by Depp himself, explores the tumultuous life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. Riccardo Scamarcio embodies the role of Modigliani, and the movie boasts a stellar supporting cast, including Stephen Graham as Léopold Zborowski and Scarface legend Al Pacino as Maurice Gangnat.

The screenplay, based on Dennis McIntyre’s play “Modigliani,” promises to dive deep into three chaotic days of the artist's life. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp's appearance at the festival is shaping up to be a highlight in what has otherwise been considered an unremarkable 10-day event.

Prior to its screening in Rome, Modì will be honored with the Capri Cult Award, with producer Barry Navidi, a close associate of Al Pacino, accepting the accolade. The biopic premiered at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival on September 24, 2024, where it was warmly received by the audience, complete with sporadic applause and cheers during the screening, as noted by Deadline.

The film holds special significance for Depp, as it is dedicated to his late friend, musician Jeff Beck. Depp, who had toured with Beck in 2022, presented Modì at San Sebastián while paying homage to his dear friend. The premiere also marked a turning point for Depp following the conclusion of his highly publicized legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp had faced two high-profile defamation cases—one in Virginia and another libel case against The Sun newspaper in London, both of which played out in the public eye.

The controversies surrounding Depp's personal life, especially the lawsuits against Heard, dominated social media for years. However, Modì seems to be Depp’s first significant re-entry into the public sphere as a filmmaker, and fans have been overwhelmingly supportive.

A fan account, Depp_Head4ever, shared news of Modì closing the Rome Film Festival, leading to a flood of supportive comments. One user exclaimed, “So proud and happy for him. There’s no stopping this man. Proof that you can’t keep a good man down.” Another chimed in, “You are amazing… To see this movie is going to be so exciting.”

Modì is set for a national release on December 5, 2024, distributed by Be Water, and is produced by Depp's production company, IN.2 Film. The screenplay, penned by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski, further cements Depp’s continued role as a force in Hollywood filmmaking.

Meanwhile, speculation persists about Depp's possible return as Captain Jack Sparrow. While Disney has yet to confirm anything, and Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is said to feature a new cast, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has expressed his hopes for Depp’s return, leaving fans of the beloved pirate eager for more updates.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
