When Animal Kingdom opened at Walt Disney World Resort in 1998, it quickly established itself as one of the most unique and impressive zoos in the state. While it offers roller coasters, character dining, and stage shows, it remains, at its core, a zoo.
Visitors to this breathtaking park have the chance to see an array of fascinating animals, from Sumatran tigers and Silverback gorillas to elephants, rhinos, giraffes, Ankole cattle, and many more!

Though Kilimanjaro Safaris is likely the most popular attraction for animal enthusiasts, the park also features several peaceful walking trails where guests can quietly observe animals and watch them interact with one another.
Animal Kingdom has long been a haven for animal lovers, blending the magic of a theme park with the beauty and diversity of wildlife. The park has even more to celebrate this week as it welcomes a litter of Asian small-clawed otter pups, adding a new layer of excitement for guests and cast members alike.

A Joyful Announcement
On January 15, Mark Penning, Disney’s Vice President of Animals, Science, and Environment, took to Instagram to share the heartwarming news.
Mae, an Asian small-clawed otter, recently gave birth to several pups backstage at Animal Kingdom. In his post, Penning highlighted the parents’ roles and the early milestones these tiny new additions are reaching:
“Mae, an Asian small-clawed otter mom, recently welcomed a litter of pups at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. 🦦🐾 As the smallest otter species, these pups are already showing their unique charm. As you can see from these photos, mom is taking care of the otter pups backstage when they are not napping. The dad, Kevin, is also actively involved in the process of taking care of these new additions. Over the next few months, they will reach key milestones, like opening their eyes, trying solid foods, and learning to swim. The animal care team is closely watching their progress as they grow. Look for these pint-sized pups on Discovery Island soon!”

A Closer Look at Asian Small-Clawed Otters
Known as the smallest otter species in the world, Asian small-clawed otters are an absolute delight to watch. Their nimble paws and playful personalities make them a favorite among visitors at Animal Kingdom’s Otter Grotto.
These otters are also highly social, often living in close-knit family groups. Mae’s new pups highlight the importance of conservation efforts, as their species faces challenges from habitat loss and pollution in the wild.

Disney’s commitment to wildlife preservation shines through in moments like these. By providing a safe environment for animals to thrive, the park not only entertains but also educates guests on the significance of protecting our planet’s ecosystems.
A Legacy of Conservation
The birth of these otter pups is just one example of Animal Kingdom’s dedication to conservation. In 2024 alone, the park celebrated the arrivals of Corra, a baby elephant, and Basko, an endangered Sumatran tiger.
Each birth represents a victory for species preservation and highlights Disney’s role in global wildlife efforts.

Guests inspired by these successes can contribute to the Disney Conservation Fund, which supports vital programs around the world. By donating, you can play a part in protecting animals and their habitats for future generations.

If you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World, be sure to include a stop at Animal Kingdom to experience its incredible wildlife attractions. While the otter pups aren’t yet ready for public viewing, the anticipation of their debut adds even more excitement to the park’s already magical offerings.
