When Will Mufasa Roar on Disney+? Disney Drops Exciting Streaming Tease!

Thirty years ago, Disney debuted The Lion King, an animated masterpiece that tells the story of Simba, a young lion who flees his pride after his uncle, Scar, manipulates him into believing that he caused his father Mufasa’s death.

Simba grows up under the care of Timon the meerkat and Pumbaa the warthog, but he must return to the Pride Lands when he discovers that Scar has ruined their home and the pride is on the verge of starvation.

The Lion King was a major hit, grossing over $750 million and becoming the highest-grossing film of 1994. At the time, it was also the second-highest-grossing film ever, following Jurassic Park (1993).

The film’s success led Disney to produce numerous sequels, spin-offs, and animated series. While these didn’t generate the same level of excitement as the original, they all performed well financially.

The 2019 live-action remake stirred controversy, particularly with the exclusion of Scar’s song, “Be Prepared,” and the decision to make the animals’ facial expressions less expressive.

On December 20, 2024, Disney released Mufasa: The Lion King, the latest addition to the Lion King franchise. This film acts as both a prequel and a sequel, exploring the childhoods of Mufasa and Scar while also introducing Simba and Nala’s daughter, Kiara. It also reveals that the royal couple is expecting another cub.

After a successful theatrical run, grossing over $600 million worldwide since its release in December 2024, the movie is set to arrive on the streaming platform this month, much to the delight of eager fans who have been waiting for the chance to stream the film from home.

During the 2025 Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, Dana Walden, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, confirmed that the film would be available for streaming on Disney+ later this month.

Although no specific date was given, this announcement has generated plenty of excitement, especially as fans have eagerly awaited the movie's digital release.

While many fans had the chance to see Mufasa: The Lion King in theaters, others are now eagerly anticipating the streaming release on Disney+. Given Disney+’s popularity as a go-to platform for streaming Disney’s latest films, this is a big moment for the movie, as it will soon be accessible to millions of subscribers.

What’s Next for Disney+?

As Disney continues to make waves in the streaming world, Mufasa: The Lion King isn’t the only exciting release on the horizon. Moana 2 is also set to arrive on Disney+ in March, continuing the journey of the beloved characters Moana, Maui, and the Polynesian mythology that captivated audiences in the first film.

Alongside Moana 2, Mufasa will join the ranks of major Disney+ releases, showing the company’s commitment to providing fresh content and expanding its library of beloved films. Fans of Disney’s iconic characters and franchises can look forward to more exciting offerings in the coming months.

What’s Next for the Lion King Franchise?

As Disney continues to expand the Lion King franchise, fans can’t help but wonder what the future holds. Will we see more films, more prequels, or even a deeper dive into the stories of other characters from the Pride Lands? Disney’s success with Mufasa and the ongoing popularity of The Lion King series suggests that more is likely on the way.

For now, though, fans can rest easy knowing that Mufasa is making its way to Disney+ soon, and they won’t have to wait much longer to experience the heartwarming prequel.
