Magic Kingdom has seen its fair share of changes over the years, from major attraction overhauls to subtle tweaks that only the most dedicated Disney fans notice. But this week, something—or rather, someone—is missing from Tomorrowland.
Sonny Eclipse Vanishes from Cosmic Ray's
For nearly three decades, Sonny Eclipse has entertained guests at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café, delivering his signature lounge act with a mix of smooth vocals, space-themed jokes, and glowing Astro-Organ melodies. A beloved cult favorite, the animatronic alien from the planet Zork has been a constant presence in Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland.

But as of this week, his stage is empty.
According to Blog Mickey, Disney has quietly removed Sonny Eclipse, leaving only a special events stage in his place. While no official explanation has been given, the move has sparked speculation among fans. Typically, Disney uses this stage for seasonal events like Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, but with no major celebrations currently taking place, Sonny’s absence feels more unexpected.
The most likely reason? Routine maintenance. His set is designed to be lifted into the ceiling for repairs or temporary removal, something that has happened before. In early 2023, he disappeared for several months before eventually returning, so it’s possible this is just another short-term fix.

A Park in Transition
Sonny Eclipse’s disappearance comes amid a wave of transformation at Walt Disney World.
Back in 2023, Disney announced a massive $60 billion investment plan that will reshape its theme parks and cruise experiences over the next decade. With $17 billion allocated to Walt Disney World Resort, Magic Kingdom is set to undergo major changes—including the introduction of a brand-new Cars-themed area in Frontierland.
The land will feature two new attractions, including an off-road racing experience that reimagines Radiator Springs in a frontier setting. However, this expansion also spells the end for Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America.
Elsewhere in the park, Disney is preparing to unveil the highly anticipated Villains Land. Designed around a “mysterious spell” that unites Disney’s most infamous villains, the new area will immerse guests in a dark, magical setting filled with sinister plots and iconic characters. “Their evil ambitions give us endless possibilities to tell new stories,” Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro teased in 2024.

Meanwhile, other parks are seeing equally drastic shifts. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is replacing Muppet*Vision 3D with a Monsters, Inc. (2001) land, headlined by the company’s first-ever suspended roller coaster. The Muppets, however, won’t be disappearing entirely—they’re set to take over a reimagined Rock ‘n' Roller Coaster, which will lose its Aerosmith theme.
Over in Animal Kingdom, the long-awaited closure of DinoLand U.S.A. is finally happening, with the first section of the land closing earlier this year ahead of Indiana Jones and Encanto (2021) attractions taking its place.

With all these changes in motion, Tomorrowland remains untouched by major updates. But its aging aesthetic has drawn criticism in recent years, leaving many to wonder whether a refresh is on the horizon. And with Sonny Eclipse suddenly missing, it raises the question: Is this just a tune-up, or the beginning of a larger transformation?
For now, fans can only hope that Sonny Eclipse will return to his rightful place at Cosmic Ray's. After all, Magic Kingdom wouldn’t be the same without its smooth-talking, intergalactic crooner.
