A major Disney attraction is now unavailable to guests.
Haunted Mansion is one of the company’s best-known rides, with versions operating at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, and Tokyo Disney Resort. While the core experience remains similar, each park follows its own refurbishment schedule and seasonal calendar.
Some versions also receive temporary overlays tied to The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). These changeovers require extended closures while Disney installs new sets, decorations, lighting, music, and Audio-Animatronics.
That process is now underway at one Disney park.
Haunted Mansion Closes for Six Weeks
Haunted Mansion at Tokyo Disneyland officially closed on August 4.
The attraction is scheduled to remain unavailable through September 14, giving Disney roughly six weeks to complete its seasonal transformation.
The closure had already been listed on Tokyo Disney Resort’s refurbishment calendar. With the date now reached, guests visiting the park before September 15 will need to plan without one of Fantasyland’s major attractions.
Tokyo Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion opened with the park in 1983. Its exterior is similar to the version at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, while the ride uses the familiar Doom Buggy system found across several Haunted Mansion attractions.
Guests move through scenes including the stretching room, endless hallway, séance chamber, ballroom, attic, and graveyard.
The current closure is temporary and is not expected to bring a permanent replacement or major redesign.
Instead, Disney is preparing the attraction for the return of its annual seasonal overlay.
Seasonal Version Returns in September
Haunted Mansion is scheduled to reopen on September 15 as Haunted Mansion “Holiday Nightmare.”
The seasonal version is inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas and introduces Jack Skellington, Sally, Oogie Boogie, and other characters from Halloween Town.
The overlay follows Jack as he brings his own version of Christmas to the mansion. Disney adds themed props, music, lighting, decorations, and Audio-Animatronics throughout the ride.
Tokyo Disneyland first introduced Haunted Mansion “Holiday Nightmare” in 2004. It has since become a regular part of the park’s autumn and winter schedule.
Disneyland in California operates a similar seasonal version, Haunted Mansion Holiday, although the two attractions follow separate refurbishment calendars.
While Magic Kingdom lacks the overlay, the park did recently reveal a refreshed exterior for the attraction.
When Tokyo Disneyland’s ride reopens, guests will experience the seasonal version rather than the standard Haunted Mansion.
The overlay is expected to remain in place for several months before Disney closes the attraction again to restore the original version.
Until then, Haunted Mansion will remain closed to all guests through September 14.
