Walt Disney World Resort has decided not to demolish the existing Tree of Life Theater at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. The news comes weeks after the permanent closure of its long-term resident, It’s Tough to Be a Bug!.
It’s Tough To Be a Bug!, which had been part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park since its opening in 1998, closed its doors for the final time on March 16, 2024. The closure set the stage for an all-new Zootopia (2016) themed show: “Zootopia: Better Zoogether!.”
At the 2023 Destination D23 event, Walt Disney Imagineering revealed that the new show would replace It’s Tough to Be a Bug! in the Tree of Life Theater. Like its predecessor, the experience will be a 4D, immersive show featuring advanced audio-animatronics, a 3D film, a new song, and even the return of Ginnifer Goodwin as the voice of Judy Hopps. The new show will open later this year, coinciding with the release of Zootopia 2 (2025).
Multiple construction permits have been filed since the closure of It’s Tough To Be A Bug!, but they haven’t revealed many details about Zootopia: Better Zoogether!. But on Wednesday, a Walt Disney World Resort official shared more details about the ongoing construction.
According to WDWNT, Disney has confirmed that Zootopia: Better Zoogether! will reuse several existing effects from It’s Tough To Be A Bug!. The plan seems to focus on updating the existing infrastructure without fully demolishing the Tree of Life Theater or radically altering the beloved symbol of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.
This announcement offers some clarity about permits filed for work inside the Tree of Life. One such permit lists Incryo Systems Inc., a company known for creating cryogenic vaporizers, hinting that some of the fog effects used in It’s Tough to Be a Bug! may return. However, Walt Disney World Resort wouldn’t say which effects it plans to reuse.
Walt Disney World Resort has not provided a specific timeline for the new show’s debut, but it’s expected to coincide with the release of Zootopia 2 on November 26, 2025.
