Disney World Says Goodbye to Patriotism in Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney World Resort has been undergoing significant changes in recent years, and the latest updates are happening in the iconic Liberty Square area at Magic Kingdom Park. Themed around colonial America, Liberty Square has been an integral part of the park’s storytelling since its 1971 opening. However, recent renovations are signaling a shift in its historic design.

Liberty Square is one of six themed lands at Magic Kingdom, sitting alongside Frontierland, Adventureland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, and Main Street, U.S.A. In the coming years, both Liberty Square and Frontierland will undergo major transformations. Walt Disney Imagineers plan to demolish the Rivers of America, including Tom Sawyer Island, to make way for two new attractions based on Pixar’s Cars (2006). While these rides will technically be in Frontierland, the changes will have a significant impact on Liberty Square, causing the closure of the Liberty Square Riverboat attraction and the end of the scenic riverfront area.

Several other areas of Magic Kingdom Park have also been undergoing major overhauls. Frontierland has already seen a transformation with the closure of the original Shootin’ Arcade, which has made way for a new Disney Vacation Club (DVC) lounge. Last year, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure officially replaced Splash Mountain, and Disney premiered the refreshed Country Bear Musical Jamboree. Furthermore, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently closed for a year-long refurbishment as Imagineers anticipate a surge in visitors once the new Disney Villains land is completed, making Magic Kingdom Park larger than ever.

But not all changes at Magic Kingdom Park are as grandiose as the upcoming new lands. Currently, Walt Disney World Resort is quietly refurbishing some historic brickwork near the bridge connecting the Cinderella Castle area to Liberty Square. According to a recent report from WDWNT, the brickwork is being replaced in patches. Previously cordoned off by ropes, the area is now open to guests, but the contrast between the newly replaced bricks, surrounded by bright white mortar, and the surrounding worn and dirty bricks is quite noticeable.

Crews work overnight to replace the bricks, minimizing disruptions to guest traffic and ensuring the construction doesn’t interfere with Disney’s Festival of Fantasy Parade or other daily cavalcades that pass over the bridge. It’s unclear whether the work will continue or if more patches will be added, but the difference between the old and new bricks is apparent.

As the changes continue around Magic Kingdom Park, Walt Disney World Resort fans can expect even more shifts in the park’s classic areas in the coming years. The landscape of Liberty Square will look markedly different as these transformations unfold.
