Disney Tries To Upstage Epic Universe With Perfectly Timed Reopening

Walt Disney World is making a bold move. For the first time since 2019, all six of its parks — the four theme parks and both water parks — will be open at the same time starting May 21, 2025. That includes Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, Typhoon Lagoon, and Blizzard Beach.

The timing couldn’t be more obvious.

Just one day later, Universal Orlando is set to officially open Epic Universe, its most ambitious project ever. Disney’s decision to fully activate all of its parks on May 21 looks like a strategic attempt to steal some thunder from Universal’s big moment.

Historically, Disney has alternated between its two water parks due to refurbishments or staffing. But this summer, both Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon will run side by side from May 21 through September 7. That full reopening is a big deal for longtime Disney fans who remember when this was the norm.

Now, it feels like Disney is saying, “We’re back to full strength — and just in time.”

While Universal prepares to roll out immersive lands based on SUPER NINTENDO WORLD and Dark Universe, Disney’s focusing on keeping vacationers inside the Disney bubble. The May 21 move sends a clear message: “You don’t need to go down the road for excitement — it’s all right here.”

The return of both water parks is also a sign that Disney is gearing up for a competitive summer. For families planning a trip to Central Florida, the decision of where to spend their money just got more interesting. Epic Universe may be new and shiny, but Disney’s making a case that its long-standing magic is more than enough.

So yes — May 21 is a huge day. Not just for Disney World, but for the Orlando theme park scene overall. The battle for attention, vacation dollars, and media buzz is heating up, and Disney just fired one of the first major shots.

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
