For actors, taking on a role in a Marvel film often signals a major turning point in their careers. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has transformed relatively unknown actors into household names, offering them global recognition and unmatched opportunities. Elizabeth Olsen is no exception.
Since joining the MCU in 2014 as Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, Olsen has become an essential part of the MCU, appearing in major films and TV shows like Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), WandaVision, a series on Disney+, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).

However, the actress has recently expressed some surprising thoughts on her iconic role that have left fans pondering the true cost of her success in the franchise.
Olsen's role as Wanda was pivotal in shaping the MCU's next phases, yet in a candid interview on NPR's Wild Card With Rachel Martin podcast, the actress opened up about her complicated relationship with the Marvel universe.
Olsen explained how, despite the success of her career and the opportunities the MCU gave her, her involvement in the franchise wasn’t always in line with her personal artistic preferences.
“I think I haven’t always successfully made choices in my work that are aligned with my personal taste and that is something I feel like I’m still trying to prove when I meet people. Especially if it’s a work type meeting and be able to express my personal taste in films and literature, and so I still think I have that to prove.”

Despite the immense success and the fame she achieved through her work as the Scarlet Witch, Olsen admitted that it’s not the type of filmmaking she typically enjoys. “As much as I love being a part of this world — and I’m proud of what I’ve been able to do with the character — it’s not really the art that I consume,” she said.
She went on to explain how her perspective on the MCU changed over time.
“I thought they were such great Greek-type scale stories that reflected politics, culture in a really lovely way. And so I felt really proud to jump into it. And then, within the last 10 years, it’s taken on this narrative of like, it’s like a hot take, whether an actor says they want to, they would never do a Marvel movie or not.”

Last month, Ms. Olsen confirmed that she would not appear in upcoming Avengers films, including Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). While this marks a significant departure from the MCU’s blockbuster productions, Olsen’s commitment to voicing Wanda Maximoff in the animated Marvel Zombies series, which premieres on October 3, 2025, indicates that her connection to the character will continue in some form.
Olsen’s decision marks a significant moment in her career. As the MCU continues to evolve, the question remains whether other actors will follow suit, choosing roles that better align with their personal artistic desires. Will Olsen’s departure from these major Marvel films signal a trend among other stars? Or will the MCU continue to attract top talent despite the challenges it presents?
