Is Disney Really Selling One of Its Castles? Yes, but Its Not the One You Think

You Can Own It too...for a Certain Price of Course

It’s the kind of storybook scene you expect to find in a Disney movie: a majestic castle nestled on the edge of the sea, its turrets rising from the misty Irish countryside, hiding secrets behind enchanted doors and winding staircases. But what if we told you this castle is real—and it could be yours?

And here’s the twist: this isn't just a castle that looks like something out of a Disney tale. It is a Disney castle. Or at least, it was—owned and lovingly restored by Roy E. Disney himself, nephew of Walt and longtime executive of the Disney company. So, why is the Disney family's secret Irish escape suddenly back on the market?

A Hidden Kingdom in Ireland—With Real Disney Magic

Welcome to Coolmain Castle, a coastal estate tucked along Courtmacsherry Bay in West Cork, Ireland. Dating back to the 1700s, the estate spans a regal 56 acres and includes an array of fairytale features—think spiral staircases hidden behind false bookcases, ocean-facing turrets, and a lily pond fit for a swan princess.

Coolmain Castle became part of the Disney legacy in 1989 when Roy E. Disney bought the property from Hollywood photographer Bob Willoughby. Locals say the Disneys viewed it as their “Shangri-La,” a private sanctuary far from the public eye, where family and friends could escape in style.

It’s been described as “manageable” in size, but this is no humble cottage. The estate includes up to nine bedrooms, a staff or guest house, a tennis pavilion, walled gardens, stables, and private access to the nearby cove.

What’s It Worth to Own a Piece of Disney History?

The asking price? A not-so-Mickey Mouse €7.5 million (around $8.1 million USD). That may sound steep, but compared to other luxury estate sales in the region—such as the €30 million spent by billionaire James Dyson on Ballynatray Estate—it’s practically a bargain for Disney royalty.

What makes this sale especially significant is not just the property’s connection to the Disney name but the timing. With global uncertainty, shifting wealth, and rising interest in secluded, legacy properties, Coolmain Castle is attracting attention from far beyond Ireland’s green shores.

Brokers Andy Donoghue of Hodnett Forde and David Ashmore of Lisney Sotheby’s International Realty anticipate strong international demand, but also note there’s potential for a local buyer to emerge. West Cork’s reputation for drawing high-profile residents is already well-established.

Why This Castle Sale Is More Than Just a Real Estate Listing

At face value, this is a luxury home with an iconic past. But dig deeper, and the sale of Coolmain Castle represents something more: the closing of a quiet chapter in Disney family history, and a rare chance for someone else to write the next one.

It also speaks to a broader trend. As generational wealth and legacy brands reassess their global footprints, more private, historically rich properties are re-entering the market. For Disney fans and real estate investors alike, this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to step into the pages of a living fairytale.

A Fairytale Ending—or a New Disney Beginning?

Roy E. Disney passed away in 2009, and now, 36 years after the family first laid claim to their Irish hideaway, the gates to Coolmain Castle are swinging open once more.

Will it become the next royal retreat? A luxury resort? Or will another dreamer arrive with stars in their eyes and a wish upon a star?

Whatever the outcome, one thing is certain: this is more than just a home—it’s a legacy wrapped in stone and sea mist, waiting for its next chapter.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
