VIDEO: Disney Guests in Stunned Silence as Cosmic Rewind Coaster Suspended

It’s not often guests get to see the behind-the-scenes side of Walt Disney World’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, but a recent hiccup at EPCOT changed that—sparking major reactions online.

One parkgoer, Lauren Chavez (@lchavez1121), caught the Marvel-themed roller coaster mid-malfunction on TikTok. The video, filmed while the ride was temporarily down, showed a rare “lights-on” moment. Without its usual atmospheric effects, music, or lighting, the attraction’s dark walls, empty screens, and mechanical framework were fully visible, alongside a vehicle of noticeably unenthused guests.

Viewers of the viral video were quick to respond. Some noted the ride’s stark appearance, with one user commenting:

“Not gonna lie it feels like backstage at a mega church.”

Another added:

“You mean I’m embarrassing myself in a megachurch.”

The critiques didn’t stop at comparisons. Some pointed out the environment’s lack of polish under full lighting. One commenter wrote:

“Shows just how lazy Imagineering got these past couple years.”

Others mentioned the state of the ride vehicles themselves:

“The other thing is the trains and everything are so dusty and dirty when you see them in the light. I was stuck at this spot.”

Though Cosmic Rewind is one of EPCOT’s most thrilling and high-tech attractions, these interruptions are not entirely out of the ordinary. Last month, EPCOT Vice President Matt Simon personally addressed guests during a ride shutdown. In a message issued to visitors, Simon said:

“On behalf of the entire team at EPCOT, I’d like to apologize that Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is currently unavailable. Our Cast Members are working diligently to get the attraction up and running again, and we are sorry you are not able to experience this attraction at this time.”

He added, “I hope you will enjoy some of our other attractions during your experience in the park today.”

Despite moments like these, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind remains a major draw at EPCOT. Featuring hit songs like “One Way Or Another” and “September,” the ride offers a galactic adventure like no other—complete with rotating ride vehicles and immersive storytelling. It stands alongside EPCOT’s newest headliners, including TRON Lightcycle / Run and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

Still, with its high-tech systems and intricate design, the coaster occasionally faces technical downtime, meaning that guest experiences can vary greatly depending on the day.

As EPCOT gears up for the reopening of Test Track on July 22, the Lightning Lane system will see a few updates. The revamped ride will rejoin the top-tier lineup with Frozen Ever After and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, while Soarin’ Around the World will shift to the lower tier.

Whether you’ve experienced a lights-on moment yourself or just seen them online, these glimpses into the inner workings of Disney rides offer a surprising perspective. Hopefully, those on board that day were able to finish their galactic journey once everything was restored.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
