Disney Doesn’t Want You To Remember Its Most Controversial CEO

Bob Chapek may no longer be CEO of The Walt Disney Company, but traces of his time in charge lingered longer than some fans expected—until now.

In a quiet update spotted by Disney fans this month, Disney Cruise Line has officially replaced one of the last visible nods to the former CEO. The subtle change took place on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, where a small tribute once honored Chapek as “Master Ship Builder.”

The sign had been removed shortly after Chapek’s abrupt exit in November 2022, leaving the Pump House 1 building blank for over two years. But now, a nearly identical sign has taken its place. According to WDWNT, the plaque now reads: “Joe Schott, Master Ship Builder.”

Schott was recently named President of Disney Signature Experiences, a role that puts him in charge of Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney, Aulani – A Disney Resort & Spa, and Storyliving by Disney. He also reports directly to Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro, who has his own tribute nearby on Castaway Cay: a weathered sign that reads “D’Amaro Dock Trawling Co. Offices: The Ocean’s Harvest.”

Another tongue-in-cheek sign in the area references current CEO Bob Iger: “Captain Bob Iger, Shrimp Distributors.” While both Iger and D’Amaro remain at the helm of Disney’s future, Chapek’s name has now been quietly scrubbed from view.

Chapek’s tenure, though brief, left a lasting impression on fans and shareholders alike. He championed what many saw as a quantity-over-quality push for Disney+ content, oversaw the $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century FOX, and backed the now-defunct Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel at Walt Disney World Resort. The immersive Disney Resort closed after just over a year in operation.
