Another Disney Park to Fully Close This Summer

Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios is bracing for a schedule shakeup later this month. On Satuday, August 16, the park will close at 6:00 p.m., a full three hours earlier than its standard 9:00 p.m. closing time — and the nightly performance of Fantasmic! will be canceled.

While no official reason has been given, the early closure is almost certainly due to a full park buyout or private event, a practice not uncommon at the Central Florida resort. But for those planning a visit that day, especially anyone expecting a full day capped off with fireworks or nighttime entertainment, this change may significantly alter your itinerary.

Modified Hours: How August 16 Compares to a Typical Day

Here’s how the operating hours for Hollywood Studios break down on the affected day:

  • Early Entry: 8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.

  • Regular Park Hours: 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

  • Park Hopper Availability: 8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Compare that with the park’s usual schedule — typically open from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with Fantasmic! offering an evening capstone most nights — and the contrast is sharp. Visitors used to riding Slinky Dog Dash at sunset or ending their evening with a Mickey-themed water-and-fireworks spectacular will need to adjust expectations.

The Private Event Trend: Why Parks Close Early

Disney has long been a top venue for corporate events, private celebrations, and convention afterparties. In fact, this isn’t the first time a Walt Disney World park has closed its gates early for such an occasion.

Hollywood Studios may not see as many private closures as EPCOT or Magic Kingdom, but the August 16 schedule tweak suggests a similarly large-scale booking is at play.

Not the First Disruption This Summer

Guests who visited Hollywood Studios on July 31 experienced a different kind of disruption — an unexpected partial closure of the park early in the day.

As guests entered the park that morning, entire areas were blocked off without advance notice. Echo Lake, Grand Avenue, Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular, Star Tours, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway were all closed for several hours. Even Galaxy’s Edge, though technically open, was inaccessible from the main entrance path. Guests were rerouted through Toy Story Land, a detour unfamiliar to many first-time visitors.

Disney never offered an official explanation. Yet, the morning’s disruption — and the smooth handling by Cast Members — served as a reminder that even at a park where precision is everything, surprises still happen.

Tips for August 16 Visitors

If you’ve already locked in your visit to Hollywood Studios for August 16, don’t worry — the early closure doesn’t have to ruin your day. Here’s how to adjust:

  • Start early. Use the Early Entry window to beat crowds and hit high-demand rides like Tower of Terror and Rise of the Resistance.

  • Reconfigure evening plans. With no Fantasmic!, consider a reservation at a nearby Disney resort restaurant or a Park Hopper move to EPCOT for dinner and fireworks.

  • Pack for heat. August in Orlando is no joke. The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Heat Warning just days ago, forecasting “feels-like” temps over 115°F. Hydrate, wear sun protection, and pace yourself.

  • Be ready for reroutes. If last month’s closure is any indication, you may encounter unplanned detours. Don’t panic — Cast Members are always nearby with instructions.

Major Construction Signals the Park’s Transition

Hollywood Studios is undergoing a transformation far deeper than temporary closures.

Earlier this year, Disney quietly closed Grand Avenue, including Muppet*Vision 3D and Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano. In its place? An all-new Monstropolis land, anchored by a suspended roller coaster themed to Monsters, Inc. No opening date has been shared, but the scope of the project suggests it will be a major addition.

And there’s more:

  • Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, while still open for now, is being eyed for a Muppets retheme, expected to debut in 2026.

  • On September 25, 2025, the entire Animation Courtyard area — including Star Wars Launch Bay and Disney Jr. Play & Dance — will close permanently. In its place: The Magic of Disney Animation, a new space inspired by Walt’s original studio lot in Burbank, featuring character sketching, film presentations, and meet-and-greet experiences.

  • The return of the Mickey Sorcerer’s Hat, once the icon of the park, will serve as a marquee centerpiece of this new area.

As construction walls rise, crowds are condensing into the park’s remaining open lands — Toy Story Land and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge — making early arrival and efficient planning more important than ever.

Final Word: Why This Closure Matters

It’s easy to dismiss a three-hour early closure as minor. But for families on tight schedules, it can make or break a day’s itinerary — especially if you were hoping to end your visit with a show like Fantasmic!, or if you planned a dining reservation tied to an 8 p.m. exit.

With significant reimagining happening across the park and more surprises likely ahead, visitors in the next year will encounter a very different Hollywood Studios than they’ve known.

So: be aware, be adaptable, and most of all — get there early.
