Over the years, Chad Michael Murray has become synonymous with iconic roles in One Tree Hill, Freaky Friday (2003), and A Cinderella Story (2004). His status as a teen heartthrob during the early 2000s made him a household name, especially among millennial fans.
Today, he's a staple in romantic Christmas movies and stars in the beloved series Sullivan’s Crossing. But before the fame and stardom, Murray faced an unimaginable challenge—one that nearly cost him his life.

His life-altering experience, which he recently shared on the Great Company podcast, serves as a reminder of how fragile life can be. While many know him for his roles on the big and small screens, Murray’s true story of survival is one that has shaped who he is today.
A Battle for Survival at a Young Age
Murray’s brush with death occurred when he was just 15 years old. The young actor, still far from the Hollywood spotlight, suddenly found himself fighting for his life after suffering from a twisted intestine. This medical emergency sent him to the hospital, where his condition quickly worsened.
“It was a lot. We had surgery, I had internal bleeding, I lost 50 percent of my blood. I was on my deathbed. I just remember seeing my father, the weakest I’d ever seen him, and a priest at the end of my bed. They’re talking about last rites and all that stuff, and [the nurse, Sandy] gave me a blood transfusion to save my life. It saved my life.”

This terrifying moment was a turning point in his life, and despite the darkness of the situation, Murray’s recovery began with the life-saving blood transfusion. However, his journey didn’t end there.
A Life After Death
Following the transfusion, Murray was still far from out of danger. He remained in the hospital for two months, undergoing another surgery to repair the extensive damage caused by the twisted intestines.
“You’re in there for two months, and you know, my organs shut down because you have blood all coagulated around them, and they had to wait till everything [healed more]. So, anyway, I had to have a second surgery to clean everything up.”
Though his body was frail, the experience sparked something inside him that would forever change his trajectory. It was during this difficult time that Murray’s life took a surprising turn.

A Model for a New Career
While in the hospital, one of his nurses, Alana, saw potential in the young teen and suggested he pursue modeling. “She told me that I should consider modeling. I told her I wasn’t really interested in being a model, but I did want to be an actor,” Murray shared. Alana, ever supportive, introduced him to a modeling agency, setting him on the path to something bigger than he could have ever imagined.
Once he left the hospital, Murray didn’t just focus on recovery—he dove into his new aspirations. Alana was true to her word, and it didn’t take long for Murray to book multiple modeling jobs. This initial success soon led to another pivotal moment in his career: an opportunity to try acting.
