Cedar Point has been having some issues lately with a few of its rides. Their newest addition, Siren's Curse, continues to leave guests stranded on the tilt, leading to numerous evacuations.
Now, a cable snapped while guests were still on board this 90s ride, leading to another attraction closing down as the summer ended.

Cedar Point Attraction Now Closed Indefinitely Following Cable Snapping Mid-Flight
The August night felt like any other at Cedar Point—families weaving through the Midway, coaster trains roaring overhead, and neon lights bouncing off Lake Erie’s waters. But in one corner of the park, the normal soundtrack shifted. A sudden metallic noise, a pause in motion, and dozens of eyes turned upward to see a ride car sitting still against the night sky.
For those inside the ride’s seats, time slowed to a crawl. Below, maintenance teams and curious guests gathered as the situation unfolded. Moments later, riders were lowered safely to the ground, but the questions—and the online chatter—started immediately.
If Cedar Point is on your travel list this season, here’s what you need to know about the incident, the future of the ride, and the best ways to make the most of your day without it.

The Official Report
According to Bryan Levin of the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Division of Amusement Ride Safety & Fairs, the issue occurred around 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 10. A cable on the Power Tower ride—an attraction that sends riders soaring 240 feet before a high-speed drop—detached from one of the towers.
Cedar Point spokesperson Tony Clark confirmed the safety system worked exactly as intended, returning the ride car to the platform for a safe exit.
“Safety is a top priority and the ride will remain closed while we complete a thorough review and inspection,” Clark said.
Power Tower, which debuted in 1998, features two towers: one launches guests upward at speeds close to 50 mph, the other provides a pure freefall drop. The attraction will stay closed until it passes a full reinspection.

Your Game Plan Without Power Tower
With the ride temporarily unavailable, you can still pack your day with thrills by adjusting your strategy:
-
Download the Cedar Point app for live wait times and mobile ordering.
-
Get there early to hit Steel Vengeance and Millennium Force before crowds swell.
-
Opt for midweek visits when lines are shorter.
-
Book a park hotel for Early Entry privileges and bonus ride time.

Local-Level Hacks
Frequent visitors recommend a few clever shortcuts and hidden gems:
-
Maverick first at rope drop via the Frontier Trail path.
-
Sunset views from the Giant Wheel—shorter lines than the coasters and just as spectacular.
-
Frontier Town drink stations beat the Midway for shorter queues.
-
Night rides on Steel Vengeance feel faster and more intense than in daylight.

Why Fans Care
For Cedar Point regulars, Power Tower isn’t just another ride—it’s part of the park’s legacy. Any downtime draws comparisons to past incidents, like the 2014 Skyhawk cable snap that injured two riders. While this latest situation ended safely, it has already sparked discussions across social media, from safety debates to nostalgic memories.
Park and state inspectors are now collaborating with the ride’s manufacturer to determine the cause before Power Tower reopens.
