Closure Alert! Cars Land’s Biggest Ride at Disneyland Resort Goes Dark Tomorrow

The desert roads of Cars Land are about to fall silent. Disney California Adventure has confirmed that Radiator Springs Racers, its headline attraction since 2012, will close for refurbishment beginning Monday, August 18. That means today, Sunday, August 17, is officially the final day to experience the attraction before it goes offline for several weeks.

The beloved ride — often considered the centerpiece of Disney California Adventure’s multi-million-dollar expansion — is no stranger to downtime, but this closure is already generating extra buzz. Unlike previous maintenance cycles, no exact reopening date has been given this time around, leaving fans guessing when the high-octane races through Ornament Valley might return.

Scott Gustin shared a reminder stating, “Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure Park will close for routine refurbishment beginning Monday, Aug. 18, and is currently set to reopen Sept. 26 (subject to change). The work will include track resurfacing, lighting enhancements, and audio/visual upgrades.”

For many guests, Radiator Springs Racers is the defining attraction of Disney California Adventure. Since Cars Land opened in 2012, the ride has stood out for its unique mix of storytelling and thrills. The first half immerses riders in the animated world of Pixar’s Cars, complete with lifelike animatronics and scenic desert backdrops. The second half shifts gears into a full-speed race against another car, with the winner randomly chosen each time.

That unpredictable ending, combined with the ride’s impressive set design, makes Racers a repeat favorite — and explains why its closure, even temporarily, impacts the way many families plan their trips.

What’s Actually Happening During Refurbishment

Disney hasn’t provided a detailed list of everything being worked on, but available permit filings give some insight. Guests can expect both routine upkeep and technical upgrades.

Key projects include:

  • Track resurfacing and safety checks, a standard process for high-speed rides.

  • A full switch to LED lighting, which should brighten nighttime scenes and improve energy efficiency.

  • Upgrades to audio and projection systems, likely making dialogue clearer and special effects more seamless.

  • Network system improvements, designed to keep the ride more reliable and reduce unplanned downtimes.

The storyline and major show scenes won’t change, but Disney appears focused on polishing the experience to ensure it continues to meet modern standards.

Looking Back at Previous Closures

Radiator Springs Racers is no stranger to “pit stops.” Earlier this year, in February 2024, the attraction briefly shut down for routine work. Before that, a longer closure took place in August 2023. The difference this time is the lack of a reopening date. Past refurbishments were announced with clear timelines, allowing guests to adjust their expectations.

Now, all Disney has said is that the ride will be closed for “about a month or longer.” That vagueness has left many wondering if the attraction will remain shuttered well into the fall, possibly overlapping with Halloween Time — one of the park’s busiest and most festive seasons.

Cars Land Without Its Signature Ride

Even without Racers, Cars Land still delivers plenty of magic. Visitors can spin along with Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree, dance with Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters, or relax at Flo’s V8 Café, which remains one of the park’s most popular quick-service dining spots.

The land itself remains a major draw, especially at night when its glowing neon transforms Radiator Springs into a dazzling backdrop. And with Halloween just weeks away, the land’s annual “Haul-O-Ween” overlay will soon bring car-themed costumes and spooky decorations to the streets, ensuring guests won’t leave disappointed.

Tips If You’re Visiting Today

Since today marks the last opportunity to ride before refurbishment begins, fans who want one final lap should plan carefully:

  • Arrive early: Lines build quickly, often topping 90 minutes by late morning.

  • Use Lightning Lane: If you’re considering paying for Genie+ or Individual Lightning Lane, this is the attraction where it’s worth it.

  • Ride after dark: Cars Land at night offers an entirely different experience. The neon lights paired with the desert backdrop make the final race feel unforgettable.

There’s no doubt Radiator Springs Racers will return — Disney has emphasized this is a refurbishment, not a retirement. But with no clear end date, the coming weeks will feel quieter in Cars Land.

Once the work is complete, the attraction should be in better shape than ever, with sharper visuals, smoother performance, and fewer unexpected downtimes. For now, though, the countdown is nearly over.

If you want one last race through Ornament Valley, today is the day. Because starting tomorrow morning, the starting line will be empty, the engines silent, and the checkered flag tucked away until the Racers roar back to life.
