Walt Disney World Resort has begun making big changes at Magic Kingdom Park, and this time, a classic part of Liberty Square is disappearing. The change comes as part of the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island’s transformation into a Cars (2006)-themed area in Frontierland.
The first signs of change came in early July, when the Rivers of America, Liberty Square Riverboat, and Tom Sawyer Island closed permanently. By late August, the Rivers of America was drained completely, leaving the iconic riverbed dry for the first time in many years.

In addition to the water removal, Walt Disney Imagineers have begun dismantling the tracks for the Liberty Square Riverboat. On August 28, 2025, WDWNT reported that crews had officially removed the first piece of track, marking the beginning of a larger demolition process.
Though some puddles (likely rainwater) remain in the area, heavy construction equipment and building supplies have replaced much of the once-lush setting.
The dismantling of the Liberty Square Riverboat tracks is just the latest part of the area’s reimagining into Piston Peak National Park. Inspired by the natural beauty of America’s national parks, the Cars-themed area will feature a thrilling rally race ride, a family-friendly attraction, and stunning natural landscaping. These changes are expected to incorporate existing features like barrel bridges and parts of the Rivers of America.
Although the Liberty Belle Riverboat has been removed from the river, it hasn’t been entirely retired just yet. The boat was temporarily relocated to a backstage dock behind Magic Kingdom Park, but it remains intact, with rumors circulating about whether it will be preserved, reimagined, or possibly even repurposed. Walt Disney World Resort has not commented on the future of the Liberty Belle, though aerial imagery suggests the boat remains untouched.
