Few performances are as inseparable from their characters as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. His mix of robotic menace and unlikely humanity helped cement James Cameron’s 1991 blockbuster as a cultural landmark. But with Arnie confirming he’s done with the Terminator film series, who, if anyone, can replace him?
While Schwarzenegger steps away, the franchise itself is revving back to life. For starters, Bitmap Bureau recently dropped the first trailer for “Terminator 2D: No Fate”, an arcade-style reimagining of the classic film. Watch the official overview trailer from IGN below:
Meanwhile, Nacon is developing “Terminator Survivors”, an open-world survival game set in the wreckage of humanity’s war against the machines. Add Netflix’s recent anime Terminator Zero and James Cameron’s talk of a cinematic reboot, and suddenly the future looks far busier for Skynet.
But who will carry the on-screen mantle? Some fans argue the series no longer needs a single face, with video games and anime proving it can thrive without Schwarzenegger. After all, despite getting mixed reviews, Terminator: Salvation (2009), which starred Christian Bale as the human lead John Connor, survived without Arnie — save for a CGI cameo. Every other Terminator film, however, stars the T-800 (not that we've complained).
Still, Hollywood will almost certainly want a new physical presence to anchor the films, whether human or cyborg.

John Cena is one name that's been floated by fans. Physically, he has the imposing frame, and his mix of action chops and surprising comedic timing could echo what made Schwarzenegger so compelling in Judgment Day and sequels such as Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), Terminator: Genisys (2015), and Terminator: Dark Fate (2019).
Dave Bautista has also been mentioned, with his stoic performances in Dune (2021) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017) showing he can pull off both menace and restraint. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, perhaps? Or maybe we've gone too far down the WWE route.

But there’s also the less obvious option: casting against type, perhaps even with a female Terminator. In a fitting shake-up, a new female cyborg would continue the trend set by Kristanna Loken (Rise of the Machines) and Summer Glau (the live-action series, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles).
Whether the next killing machine is male or female, regardless of who inherits Arnie's clothes, boots, and motorcycle, the groundwork is being laid for a new era. “Terminator 2D: No Fate” promises adrenaline-fueled nostalgia, “Survivors” offers a bleak new frontier, and Cameron’s reboot could reintroduce the story for another generation.
