Universal Studios Abruptly Reveals Replacement for Universal Studios Great Britain

Universal’s push into Europe has taken a decisive step forward. Months after confirming plans to build a new theme park in Bedfordshire, the company has revealed what the property will be called — a move that clarifies its branding strategy as the project heads toward construction.

For much of this year, it was widely believed the park would open under the name Universal Studios Great Britain. That assumption stemmed from earlier domain name registrations and quickly circulated among fans.

But on September 8, Universal ended the speculation by filing a new trademark, confirming the official name as Universal United Kingdom Resort.

Global Expansion on Multiple Fronts

The decision comes at a time of aggressive global growth for Universal’s theme park division. Epic Universe, which opened in Orlando earlier this year, is the company’s latest effort. The development introduced five lands: SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, Dark Universe, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, and Celestial Park.

Epic Universe’s reception has been strong. Signature attractions like Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, and Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment have been praised by both visitors and critics. The park secured multiple industry awards within its first year, and further expansions are already being discussed.

Elsewhere, Universal has continued to grow its portfolio. Hollywood is adding Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, Singapore recently debuted Minions Land, and Japan unveiled Donkey Kong Country in 2024. Texas will join the lineup in 2026 with the opening of Universal Kids Resort.

What to Expect in Bedfordshire

Universal’s Bedfordshire project represents the company’s first full-scale theme park in Europe. According to projections, it could generate close to £50 billion for the UK economy by 2055. Reports also suggest that Harry Potter-inspired attractions may be part of the park, despite earlier concept art that avoided the franchise.

The BBC has reported that a source close to the project revealed additional details. British franchises such as James Bond, Paddington, and The Lord of the Rings are expected to be included as part of the resort’s offerings. Construction at the Kempston Hardwick site could begin as early as next year, with a goal to open in 2031.

Not everyone is welcoming the news. Some residents near the Bedfordshire site have raised concerns over the park’s potential impact on traffic, infrastructure, and local development. As Universal moves ahead, addressing these issues will likely be central to the project’s progress.
