The Return of the Galactic Starcruiser in Orlando Has Been Confirmed

Star Wars has played a central role in Disney’s storytelling ever since the company acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. The opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in 2019 at both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort allowed guests to step into Batuu’s Black Spire Outpost, pilot the Millennium Falcon, and join the Resistance against the First Order. Just three years later, Disney introduced another ambitious addition: the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.

Announced at D23 Expo 2017, the Halcyon was billed as a revolutionary leap in immersive entertainment. Opening in 2022, the two-night adventure placed guests directly into the Star Wars galaxy. From interactive missions and themed dining to dramatic encounters between Resistance heroes and First Order officers, the experience even included a shore excursion to Batuu.

Despite its ambition, the project faced challenges. Pricing became the subject of wide discussion, and although the creativity behind the resort was praised early on, enthusiasm slowed over time. Discounts were eventually offered, but operations came to a close on September 30, 2023.

Today, the building that once housed the Halcyon is being reimagined once more—this time for Walt Disney Imagineering. Recent aerial photography from Bioreconstruct (@bioreconstruct) shows construction activity at the site, with work trucks signaling the transition to office space for the very team that brought the Starcruiser to life. Online reactions noted the irony of the choice, with some commenting that Disney’s decision felt “cold” and that the facility resembles a “prison.”

While the resort itself is no longer open, the Halcyon has found new life in an unexpected way. C & S Themed Interiors has constructed a Star Wars Hotel room designed as a perfect replica of the original cabins. “This stunning room is an exact replica of the Star Wars Hotel at Disney. We dedicated meticulous attention to recreating every detail from the original hotel,” the company explained. The space features immersive lighting, dimensional trim, and a mechanical system that triggers sound and video effects via a control panel.

The company further noted, “You won't want to miss out on exploring this extraordinary setup. We have incorporated dimensional trim on all walls and ceilings, along with a sophisticated lighting system. The room features a bunk bed with cushioned walls, a TV vox, an intercom box, and a custom-built closet. It's truly an amazing concept and one of our personal favorites.”

The Galactic Starcruiser’s brief story is one chapter in Disney’s larger approach to building worlds around beloved franchises. Marvel, acquired in 2009, has also expanded into the parks with Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure and Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris, alongside Hotel New York’s transformation into The Art of Marvel hotel.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
