After Dolly Parton Cancels, Dollywood Resort Makes Big Statement

Dolly Parton often says Dollywood is about family. Whether it’s through a festival, a meal, or a roller coaster ride, the country music legend has always wanted her park to feel welcoming and personal. That mission will soon be reflected in a historic new addition.

Earlier this week, Dollywood announced the arrival of NightFlight Expedition, a groundbreaking attraction opening in 2026. This “first-of-its-kind” experience will combine land, water, and air, offering guests a nighttime adventure across the Smoky Mountains.

The $50 million project—the largest ever for the resort—will take guests on a journey that blends a whitewater rafting trip with a roller coaster and boat voyage. Dollywood shared that riders will fly into the mountains after dark, plunge through more than 500,000 gallons of water, traverse a ridge, and cross a mysterious lake.

“I’m just so proud that Dollywood has grown so much in its first 40 years that we’re able to add a ride like NightFlight Expedition,” Parton said in a statement published by Knox News. “Our new ride sends you out into the mountains at night, which is the time that I think they really come to life!”

Though she had originally planned to appear at Dollywood for the announcement on September 17, the park confirmed the day before that she was unable to attend due to changes in her schedule.

Dollywood’s growth continues to reflect Parton’s vision. In 2024, the Dolly Parton Experience opened, showcasing her career through exhibits like Songteller: Dolly’s Journey, which chronicled her path from Sevierville beginnings to international stardom. She also often highlights small details such as the “I Will Always Love You” sign seen by guests as they exit the parks. “I love the little touches that make the people feel like I’ve said something personal to them on their way out,” she explained.

Food has always been central to the Dollywood experience as well, from Southern-inspired dining locations to favorites like the Grist Mill’s cinnamon bread. “When you come to Dollywood, everybody has a different agenda,” Parton told Travel + Leisure during the opening of HeartSong Lodge & Resort. “We’ve got some of everything—it all depends on how you want to spend your day.”

Seasonal celebrations continue to play a role in Dollywood’s identity. The annual Harvest Festival returned on September 12, 2025, bringing autumn colors and traditions to the Smokies.

Through all of this, Parton never loses sight of the families who make the journey possible. “Growing up hard myself, I know that it’s not easy to save up enough money to take the whole family to a park. It’s a lot of work, so I appreciate every bit of that.”

Dollywood regularly appears at the top of lists ranking America’s favorite resorts, often surpassing even Walt Disney World Resort. For Parton, the reason is clear. “I’m real proud of the fact that this is very family-oriented.”

With NightFlight Expedition preparing to take flight, Dollywood is once again blending innovation with heart—continuing a tradition that has defined the park for four decades.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
