Starbucks Is Closing Stores, But the Universal Location Just Got a Major Tech Upgrade

After closing for a major refurbishment earlier this summer, the flagship Starbucks at Universal Orlando’s CityWalk has officially reopened — and with it comes a much-requested feature: mobile ordering.

The reintroduction of the space was announced just days ago, and according to ParkTwisted (@ParkTwister) on X:

“Huge win! The recently remodeled Starbucks in CityWalk Orlando now offers mobile ordering.”

For guests heading into the parks or exiting after a long day, the ability to place an order ahead of time via the Starbucks app adds welcome flexibility in a location that routinely experiences high foot traffic and long wait times.

A New Look at a Familiar Stop

The location reopened to the public on September 10, 2025, after being closed for almost three months. The shop had shuttered in mid-June, with windows blocked off and guests redirected to a smaller Starbucks near Universal’s Great Movie Escape in the interim.

Now back online, the refurbished location has undergone a full interior transformation. While the exterior remains largely consistent, the interior is brighter, more spacious, and reflects a noticeable shift in design.

The outdoor seating area, which retains its covered footprint, has received an upgrade in furnishings. The previous brown-toned tables have been swapped out for sleek black tables with gray chairs, maintaining the structure’s open-air charm while modernizing the look.

Inside, the changes are more dramatic. What was once a space defined by dark woods, exposed brick, and moody industrial finishes has been reimagined with lighter tones and natural textures. The updated color palette now favors pale wood, soft greens, and white tiling, providing a much-needed refresh that matches the warm, casual energy of CityWalk.

The furniture has also been replaced, with all chairs now made of light wood and bench seating reupholstered in a muted green — a clear departure from the deep reds of the pre-renovation setup.

A Mural With Meaning

One of the most distinctive additions is a custom mural by artist Mike Willcox, who’s been increasingly involved in Starbucks' artistic collaborations. The mural replaces a previous faux-brick world map and instead introduces a vivid, underwater scene that includes coral, fish, waves, and a stylized green mermaid, subtly referencing the Starbucks logo.

The piece incorporates tones of seafoam green, orange, and soft blue, adding a vibrant layer of personality and a regional connection to the aquatic theme — fitting, given CityWalk’s proximity to Universal’s Volcano Bay and Florida’s coastal culture.

The presence of signature Willcox artwork also ties the location to Starbucks’ broader visual branding, following his contribution to the Art Deco-inspired merchandise collection earlier this year.

Operational Upgrades

While the visual changes make a strong first impression, it’s the operational improvements that many visitors are calling a standout. Most notably, the location now accepts mobile orders, something not previously supported.

Before the renovation, customers had to line up — often 10 to 20 deep — during peak hours, especially early in the morning and around park close. Now, guests can place orders from their phones through the Starbucks app, pick their items up at the mobile order station, and head into the parks without the extra wait.

The ordering counter has also been redesigned to accommodate a smoother guest flow, with updated shelving, reorganized drink prep space, and modernized lighting. A set of pale wood panels and clean white tiles now form the backdrop behind the counter, replacing the former darker shelving and brickwork.

The lighting fixtures are also new — an abstract, orb-filled design hangs above the service area, a touch that complements the clean geometry of the remodel.

Starbucks in a Year of Change

The CityWalk update comes at a pivotal time for Starbucks, which is currently undergoing structural changes across its North American footprint. Just last week, the company confirmed that it would be closing roughly 1% of its cafes in the U.S. and Canada by the end of the fiscal year.

That translates to 434 closures between Q3 and Q4, though with around 200 store openings during the same period, the net reduction is closer to 227 locations — or 1.2% overall.

While Starbucks has not published a list of affected cafes, many appear to be in California, New York, and Oregon, states with some of the highest minimum wages and a high proportion of unionized stores. Labor groups such as Starbucks Workers United are actively seeking transparency regarding the closures.

In contrast, the investment in Universal Orlando’s CityWalk location — one of the most heavily trafficked Starbucks stores in Central Florida — underscores the company’s commitment to high-volume retail hubs, even in a broader landscape of cost-cutting and consolidation.

Convenience Meets Aesthetic

With a sleek redesign and the long-overdue introduction of mobile ordering, the new CityWalk Starbucks offers a more convenient experience for locals and tourists alike. Whether you’re starting your day with a cold brew before racing to VelociCoaster, or winding down with a flat white after dinner at Bigfire, ordering ahead can now be part of the plan.

And for those who want to sit and linger, the updated seating, refreshed color scheme, and original artwork give the café a comfortable, contemporary vibe.

Starbucks at Universal Orlando’s CityWalk is now fully open and accepting mobile orders via the Starbucks app.

If you’re planning a visit to the resort soon, this is one more way to streamline your trip — and enjoy your coffee without the wait.
