The Most Christmassy ‘Star Wars’ Entries Now Streaming on Disney+

Life Day, the Wookiee holiday first introduced in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special, has become the faraway galaxy’s unofficial winter celebration, making it the closest thing the franchise has to Christmas.

While the original special is widely considered a huge misfire, it introduced a tradition that continues to inspire festive Star Wars content. Life Day continues to appear throughout the franchise, whether it's in Lego specials or canon entries such as Rebels.

Watching the original special today, however, with its awkward musical numbers and bizarre sketches, feels more like a cultural artifact than a film, yet it embodies the spirit of Life Day: chaotic, joyful, and unmistakably Star Wars.

But it's not the only “Christmassy” entry in the franchise. While 1980's The Empire Strikes Back is hardly a festive classic (though a classic nonetheless), its snowy landscapes offer a more traditional kind of holiday energy. Hoth’s icy expanses, the terrifying Wampa, and the reindeer-like Tauntauns create a setting where winter adventure and peril collide.

Meanwhile, Disney+ TV shows like Skeleton Crew and Young Jedi Adventures bring the holiday to younger viewers. Skeleton Crew captures the adventurous, curious energy of children exploring the galaxy, while Young Jedi Adventures introduces pre-schoolers to Star Wars without the intense violence found in the films, making it a safe way for little padawans (AKA younglings) to join the celebrations over the festive period.

The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special brought Life Day back to the franchise in the best way possible, parodying and celebrating the original 1978 special. It’s a colorful, animated homage that reinterprets the holiday’s traditions for contemporary audiences, blending humor with nostalgia and ensuring the fictitious holiday continues to find new life.

Whether revisiting the infamous original, experiencing snow-laden battles on Hoth, or enjoying kid-focused series and animated tributes, Star Wars offers multiple ways to celebrate the season.

All of these Star Wars entries and more are streaming on Disney+.
