Is ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5’s “Secret Episode” Really Arriving This Month?

As Stranger Things closes the book on its five-season run, fan reaction to the finale continues to evolve — and, in some cases, escalate.

The Netflix series ended with “The Rightside Up,” a finale that quickly divided its audience. While confirmed as the final-ever episode, it has sparked criticism across social media, with many viewers also questioning the creative choices made throughout Season 5.

While criticism points largely towards the script, it's Eleven’s fate that's the most debated. The finale suggests that Millie Bobby Brown’s character, who has been one of the leads since the show's inception in 2016, dies during the destruction of the Upside Down, yet stops short of offering confirmation, instead choosing to leave her fate ambiguous.

That dissatisfaction has now turned into an organized fan response. An online petition calling for extended cuts of Season 5 have gained plenty of traction, while speculation that Netflix is withholding a “final chapter” continues to grow. That wild rumor has now been dubbed the “fake ending” theory, also referred to as “Conformity Gate.”

Fans who are convinced “The Rightside Up” is nothing more than a bait and switch suggest that the epilogue — set 18 months after Vecna’s defeat and focused on the surviving characters learning to move forward — is a fabrication, adding that Vecna created the sequence as a psychic illusion, mirroring earlier moments in the season when he trapped Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) and Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) inside fake realities.

From there, fans concluded that a “true ending” would arrive separately, with January 7 frequently cited as the release date. That hasn't happened, but now some are pointing to the upcoming special “One Last Adventure”, which premieres on the streamer on January 12, as a possible hidden finale. That film, however, is a behind-the-scenes Season 5 doc.

The “fake ending” theory has been effectively dismissed by the show’s creators. The Duffer brothers confirmed that “The Rightside Up” is indeed the final chapter, telling Tudum that “there was never a version of the story where Eleven was hanging out with the gang at the end.” Cast members have also weighed in publicly.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Sadie Sink, who plays Max Mayfield, shared her interpretation of Eleven’s fate. “I think she's dead,” she said. “I think Mike's story is like just one last story… then they say goodbye to childhood.”

Jamie Campbell Bower, who portrayed Vecna, also appeared on the show and debunked the “fake ending” theory. “It’s the ending the show deserves,” he said of the Season 5 finale that premiered on December 31 (New Year's Eve). “It feels right.”

Stranger Things seasons 1 — 5 are now streaming on Netflix.
