Universal Orlando Resort just dropped a brand new Hello Kitty & Friends merchandise collection at the Universal Studios Store in CityWalk. While it’s nice to have new products featuring the iconic Sanrio character, fans are asking a bigger question: when is Universal going to give Hello Kitty the park presence she actually deserves?
The Full Merchandise Lineup
The new collection is pretty extensive with apparel, accessories, home goods, and collectibles all featuring Hello Kitty alongside other Sanrio favorites like My Melody, Kuromi, Pompompurin, Cinnamoroll, Keroppi, Badtz-Maru, and Pochacco.
Apparel includes a long-sleeve adult t-shirt for $45 with multiple Sanrio characters and “Hello Kitty and Friends” plus “Universal Studios” in cursive text, with Hello Kitty’s bow and other icons running down the sleeves. There’s also a magenta pink short-sleeve shirt for $35 with a large Hello Kitty design on front and a smaller version on the back.
Accessories include a phone crossbody for $35 that stores your phone on the front and has slots for cards and money on the back, all decorated with Hello Kitty, Kuromi, and My Melody. A coin purse for $25 features minimalist Sanrio designs with a heart charm containing an embossed Hello Kitty face and a kiss lock closure. There’s a hair bow for $22 with stacked magenta and white bows, the front one featuring an allover Hello Kitty and friends pattern.
Home goods include a decorative license plate for $25 with “Hello Kitty and Friends” text and a character lineup, a candle for $23 in white and pink packaging that smells like bubble gum and berry, and a spiral notebook for $22 with a cream cover decorated with black Sanrio character outlines.
Collectibles include a limited-edition pin set for $20 with three pins featuring Kuromi, Hello Kitty, and My Melody, magnets for $12 in single and two-pack options with various character arrangements, and holographic stickers for $8 featuring multiple characters.
The Current Universal Hello Kitty Situation
Yeah, Hello Kitty does appear at Universal Studios Florida for character meet and greets, so you can technically see her and get photos. But here’s the problem: that’s basically it. The dedicated Hello Kitty store that used to exist at the park closed a while back, and there’s no real substantial Sanrio presence beyond sporadic character appearances.
Fans have been vocal about wanting more Hello Kitty and Sanrio character representation in the parks. Not just merchandise. Not just occasional meet and greets. They want dedicated retail spaces, consistent character experiences, maybe themed areas or photo opportunities featuring these beloved characters that have massive global followings.
What Fans Are Actually Asking For
The closure of the dedicated Hello Kitty store dispersed merchandise across general Universal stores, disappointing Sanrio fans who seek immersive experiences. In contrast, Universal gives major properties like Harry Potter entire themed lands and attractions. While Hello Kitty may not warrant a full themed area, there’s a balance to be found between limited character appearances and a fully immersive environment.
Reintroducing a dedicated Hello Kitty retail space would be a great start. Expanding meet-and-greets to include more Sanrio characters would enhance guest experiences. Additionally, themed photo installations featuring Hello Kitty and friends could offer fans destinations beyond shopping.
Does This Universal Merchandise Release Mean Anything?
The new comprehensive Hello Kitty collection could signal Universal’s interest in expanding Sanrio presence at the resort. Sometimes theme parks test guest interest through merchandise before committing to bigger investments like dedicated spaces or permanent character experiences.
Or it could just mean Universal recognizes Hello Kitty merchandise sells regardless of extensive park presence because the character has such a massive devoted fanbase. Sanrio characters have multi-generational appeal with fans who buy products across countless categories whether or not they’re connected to theme park experiences.
The Frustrating Universal Disconnect
Sanrio fans find it frustrating that Universal is willing to invest in merchandise, like licensing Sanrio characters and creating product collections, but not in enhancing park experiences.
The investment in Hello Kitty and friends doesn’t lead to a meaningful park presence. Guests can buy merchandise like phone crossbodies and t-shirts, but cannot consistently experience Hello Kitty beyond occasional character meet-and-greets. There’s no dedicated destination or themed environment, limiting engagement to product purchases.
What Comes Next
Whether this merchandise release eventually leads to expanded Hello Kitty park presence or just represents Universal capitalizing on the character’s popularity through product sales without backing it up with experiences remains to be seen.
For now, Sanrio fans can shop the new Hello Kitty & Friends collection at the Universal Studios Store in CityWalk while continuing to request that Universal give these beloved characters the park representation they deserve. The merchandise is there. Fans just want the actual experiences to match.
