Disney World has officially confirmed something that feels both exciting and heartbreaking.
Four classic attractions are getting significant changes, and once 2026 is over, they will never exist in the same form again. Disney isn’t just adding a new scene here or swapping out some lighting there. These are permanent updates that change the experience guests have.
And if you’re someone who still gets nostalgic about the “old Disney World,” this announcement is going to feel like another reminder that the parks are moving on.
Disney Has a History of Replacing Fan Favorites
The company has made it clear that nothing is truly safe, no matter how iconic it is.
Disney is also moving forward with replacing Muppet Vision 3D with a Monsters Inc. land expansion.
These attractions weren’t outdated in the eyes of fans. They were classics. But Disney has leaned harder into recognizable IP and modern storytelling, even if it means closing the book on rides people grew up with.
Now Disney is doing it again, and four more attractions are following.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Is About to Feel Like a New Attraction
That extended closure signals something much bigger than a typical refurbishment.
Disney has confirmed Big Thunder will return with a refreshed storyline, new lighting, and upgraded special effects. Some scenes will even change completely.
The most notable addition is Rainbow Caverns, a deep-cut Disney reference that fits perfectly with Frontierland’s vibe.
Big Thunder will still be Big Thunder, but the ride is being modernized in a way that will permanently reshape it.

Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster’s Original Era Is Ending
Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster opened on July 29, 1999, which makes it one of the most recognizable thrill rides in Disney’s Hollywood Studios history.
Now Disney has confirmed the end date of the original version: March 2, 2026.
That means the Aerosmith version of the ride is closing permanently.
The coaster is being rethemed to The Muppets, a significant shift in tone and storytelling. Aerosmith will no longer be part of the experience, though Disney will likely include a few subtle references for guests who remember the original theme.
Either way, this ride is about to become something completely different from what it has been for nearly three decades.

DINOSAUR Is Gone, and DinoLand Is Being Replaced
This isn’t just a single ride closure. It’s Disney removing an entire section of Animal Kingdom.
The area is being rethemed into a Tropical Americas-inspired land featuring Encanto (2021) and Indiana Jones.
The greatest detail is that Indiana Jones will take over the former DINOSAUR ride system. The ride layout may survive, but the story will be rewritten from the ground up.

Carousel of Progress Is Getting a Major Update
Carousel of Progress is also on the list of attractions that will never be the same again.
Disney confirmed back in 2025 that changes were coming, and a new permit filed on February 5, 2026, suggests Disney is preparing for the next phase.
The permit focuses on new fire alarm and protection systems, which often happen when Disney is gearing up for a much larger project.
Walt Disney Will Be Added to the Beginning of the Ride
Disney has confirmed that Walt Disney will be featured at the very beginning of Carousel of Progress.
Guests will start the ride with Walt himself introducing the experience and sharing his futuristic ideas before the classic family storyline begins.
That changes the tone of the entire attraction and ties it more directly to Walt’s original vision.

Disney World Is Redefining What “Classic” Means
Big Thunder is getting new scenes and effects.
Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster is losing Aerosmith forever.
DINOSAUR is gone, and DinoLand is being replaced.
Carousel of Progress is adding Walt Disney himself to the show.
Disney World has always changed, but 2026 feels like a turning point. These aren’t minor adjustments. These are permanent transformations that will shape the parks for decades.
