Beyond Big Thunder: New Aerials Reveal First Concrete Poured for Villains Land and Piston Peak at Magic Kingdom

The skyline of the most visited theme park on Earth is currently undergoing a radical transformation. As of Saturday, February 14, 2026, the “blue-sky” concepts of the past have officially given way to the era of steel and stone. The massive $60 billion expansion of Walt Disney World has hit a critical milestone, and thanks to the latest aerial imagery from photo-journalist @bioreconstruct, we have an unprecedented look at the progress of Villains Land and the Cars-themed Piston Peak.

From the total erasure of the Rivers of America to the first structural footers emerging from the red clay, the Magic Kingdom is currently the largest active construction site in the themed entertainment world. Here is the latest update on the construction of “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” and a realistic timeline for when these new worlds will open their gates.

Piston Peak: Concrete Footers and the New Frontierland Loop

The most visible progress in the February 2026 update is the emergence of concrete forms at the Piston Peak site. For months, this areaโ€”formerly Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of Americaโ€”looked like little more than a massive, dewatered crater. Now, the skeletal outlines of the land are beginning to take shape.

  • The Arrival of Foundations: As seen in the latest aerial photos, the first concrete footers have been poured near the existing Frontierland pathway. Based on Disneyโ€™s official concept art, these footers align with the elaborate network of streams and cascading waterfalls planned to snake through the land.
  • The “Parkitecture” Transition: Disney is using a design language called “Parkitecture”โ€”inspired by the National Park Serviceโ€”to blend the new Cars expansion with Frontierland's rustic charm. The grading for the Off-Road Rally track is also visible, showing a multi-level layout that will offer high-speed kinetic energy to a previously quiet corner of the park.
  • Fixing the “Dead End”: One of the most functional benefits of this project is the creation of a continuous walking loop. Guests will soon be able to walk from the colonial shadows of the Haunted Mansion directly into Villains Land, through Piston Peak, and emerge into the Americana of Tianaโ€™s Bayou Adventure.

Villains Land: Inside “Project SNK” and the Massive New Show Building

While Piston Peak is reimagining existing space, Villains Land is pushing into raw, previously undeveloped territory north of Big Thunder Mountain. This is where the expansion reaches its most “incredibly twisted” scale.

The “Project SNK” Permits

Recently filed wastewater permits, referred to as Project SNK, have revealed the staggering scale of the show buildings currently under development. The primary show building for the Villains Land E-ticket attraction measures approximately 70,000 sq ft. To put that in perspective, that is roughly the same footprint as the Rock ‘n' Roller Coaster show building at Hollywood Studios.

Vertical Steel Countdown

As of mid-February 2026, site preparation and soil stabilization for this massive structure are nearly complete. While we are still seeing “dark dirt” on the surface, heavy machinery is currently installing massive subterranean utility lines. Analysts expect to see the first vertical steel beams for Villains Land pierce the sky by Summer 2026.

Construction Timeline: When Can You Face the Villains?

Disney has confirmed that these projects will “start to come to life over the next five years,” but based on the visible progress of the foundations and “Project SNK” permits, we can project a realistic opening cadence:

Big Thunderโ€™s Return: A Birdโ€™s-Eye View of the Progress

While the expansion areas are a hive of activity, the existing Frontierland is preparing for its own comeback. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been closed for a massive “ground-up” refurbishment, and testing has officially begun. Weighted ride vehicles have been spotted on the tracks throughout February, suggesting a reopening is imminent this spring.

When it reopens, Big Thunder Mountain will serve as the premier observation deck for the expansion. The lift hills will offer guests the only ground-level views into the Piston Peak construction zone, providing a “front-row seat” to the birth of a new era.
